It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

its quite simple, if u have a playmaker ticked then the team will generally look to use him, think of gerrard for liverpool or fabregas for arsenal (emre for newcastle )

a targetman is quite similiar but normally is a striker, if you tick the box and play "to head" then someone like crouch would be good as he can bring others into the game with flick-ons

But if you DONT tick the box but do put players in Targetman and Playmaker box then do they just get used often instead of always?

Short answer: yes. I do not know how much they are used though compared to if you tick the box, but I assume that they are used less in their respective role, but that it depends on, for example, how much space a playmaker gets.

I've had success with not ticking the box, but setting a playmaker. To me it seems to work well if the opposition manage to mark him out of the game.
