Well here it is, the long awaited (yeah right) 3 season update of my first game as a LLaMa!!
Season 06/07 - Newport County (Conference South)
The media predicted the lofty position of 16th for my first season in charge, and looking at the squad, I felt that they were having a giraffe!!!
I deciided to build my team round Experienced Striker and even more Experienced Winger. I was soon to regret this decision, as six games in I was a single point outside the relegarion zone.
Thankfully my scout had uncovered four players that I felt might make the difference and sure enough, results improved. By January (and three more signings later), I was in mid-table and looking upwards. sadly it was too little too late, and I finished in a more than respectable, but excrutiatingly painful 6th. One place, and one point outside the play-offs.
Final Position 6th (68 poits)
FA Cup - 1st Round (0-3 at home to Torquay)
FA Trophy - 1st Round (0-1 away to Forest Green)
Players in - 7 Players out - 4
Average attendance - 968
Season 07/08 - Newport County (Conference South)
The media predicted a safe mid-table position of 11th for my second season, ordinarily I'd have agreed except for the fact that I had ignored all of the reminders to renew the contracts of all but my most important players.
As a result 21 players left before the season even started. Thankfully these were mostly players from my youth academy, but it left my really short on cover. Oh and by the way, my assistant manager decided he'd had enough and refused to sign a contract.he didn't even look back in the way out.
One new assistant manager later and 9 new signings on, I was ready to build on last season.
Solid at the back all season (fifth best defensive record in the league), and lethal up front (third top scorers) meant that I finished 4th in the league and in a play off position (albeit only by a single point).
Play-off fever hit north Wales and after scraping past (and I DO mean SCRAPING past) Weston-super-Mare 2-1 0n agg. in the Semi, I got a chance of revenge for the previous season's FA Trophy defeat to Forest Green.
I still don't know how I did it, but I managed to score two more goals than they did, despite only having four shots on goal in the entire 90 mins, and achieved promotion to the Conference National with a 2-0 victory!!!
Final Position - 4th (77 points - Promotion)
FA Cup - 4th Qualifying round (3-4 on pens after a replay v Exeter)
FA Trophy - 4th round (1-3 v Aldershot)
Players in - 9 Players Out - 23
Average Attendance - 1102 (going up)
Season 08/09 - Newport County (Conference National)
The media couldn't understand why we were even turning up, predicting 23rd position and a swift return back to where I came from, and I have to say, I couldn't disagree!!!
Only one defeat in my first five games had me thinking that this Conference National business was a peice of nonsense, but five defeats on the bounce soon had me rethinking my approach.
I steadied the ship with a tactical revolution, and some solid (if unspectacular) form had me sitting in a very healthy 12th place come Christmas!!!
Then it ALL WENT WRONG!!! One win in 15 games, and a total of only three wins in my last 22 league games saw me plummeting toward the drop zone!!! Thankfully the bottom four clubs were complete and utter mince, in comparison to my being only complete mince.
I survived by 8 whole points, but finished in 20th, only one place above the drop zone!! Any other previous two seasons we would have been relegated!!
Final Position - 20th (47 points)
FA Cup - 1st round (1-3 v Brentford)
FA Trophy - 2nd Round (1-2 v Blyth)
Players in - 5 Players Out - 8
Average Attendence - 926 (Going Down)
All in all, 3 seasons in and one division higher. If I keep up that average, then I'll be in the Premiership in 12 years!!
