So, your theory is that lower league managers look at this list of unattached players, without knowing anything about them and decide that, as this 18 year old has been released from a premiership club, they will have him down for a trial?

Depends how far down the leagues you go. I recently left a tier 7 side who signed and tried them out purely on the basis that they had played for league clubs. Our all knowing chairman even signed some guy who got released by Melbourne Victory purely because of that and him being interested. The guy got here and he was useless, yet still getting more games than the players he was better than.
I've heard similar stories from as high up as League One to the same effect. I remember when Steve McMahon was Swindon boss he used to sign literally anybody who was interested that was released by Everton. As his record with us showed, it worked...
