Though not all Americans are Yankees. Despite the use of the term by the rest of the world, our countrymen in the south and west would never use that term to describe themselves. Maybe I should have turned the phrase around "Yankee American"
Supporters and Board expected us to avoid relegation. Media expected us to go down. Season started poorly with four losses in a row (including in two cups). Then we hit our stride, relegation was never in question and we were in the top half of the table to stay by Christmas. A good run of form in the last two months of the season shot us to third in the table at seasons's end and into the playoffs.
The play-offs were exactly why this game is so engrossing. Beat Queen of the South 4-3 on a goal by a striker that hadn't scored a league goal all season in the 118th minute. he had come on after 116 minutes because he had the highest penalty rating on the squad.
In the final against Raith, we lost the away leg 1-3, but at home scored three times in the first twenty minutes and went on to clinch promotion!!!!
Boy, we're going to get killed next year in the First Division.
Well so much for that. I thought we were going to be in for it after two promotions in two years, but had no idea we'd be so outclassed. We were the only part-timers in the First Division; some teams had one player that made more than our starting eleven. We fought bravely but the writing on the wall was clear very early. Season before our leading scorer had 30 goals; we only scored 30 goals in the leagur all season this time. Relegated with four games to play. My reward for this season? A two year contract for twice as much. I'll take it.
I was also in the middle of a 9 game losing streak offered the USA job. I was interested, and given the fact that our federation hasn't been able to find a coach since the world cup last summer I wasn't sure that it wasn't realistic, but decided that the USA federation couldn't find Arbroath on a map to offer me the job so I turned it down.
Back in the Second Division, everyone expected us to go back up. We were in 1st place for most of the season only to give up the automatic promotion spot with 6 games left. Five wins and a draw though in those six saw us not only reclaim first place and take the Championship by 8 points. Cups sucked arse. I don't think I won a game.
Back to the First Division next year. The team is about 80% the same as the one that got killed there last season so my hopes are not high. I also am beginning to look around to see what else is open. If the club doesn't decide to go full-time it may be time to move one.
P36 W 22 D7 L7 73pts 1st place
BTW, Rangers won the league for the 6th time in a row, and Arsenal won the Premiership by 22 points.
