Having played the game for a month or so now I have to come to the realisation that the game is full of overrated players. Kuyt for example is not a clinical striker in real life ask any liverpool supporter and they will tell you. He wacked two 30 yarders in against me at anfield and played like maradona. Obviously the people who gather info on these players are morons. Derby is the biggest example of this. In any game I have played derby never get relegated, they always seem to finish mid-table. In reality they don't have a decent players beside giles barnes. One really annoying thing is my teams conceed loads of ridiculous freekicks from players who have a rating of 13 and below. If its a freekick long shot capabilities shouldn't come into it and a world class keeper should not be getting beat from 40 yards a dozen times in a season.
If its realism we are after why with every footie manager is there a load of players and teams which leave you scratching your head when some supposed average player gives vidic or john terry a nightmare. Its one of the real annoying aspects of the game.
Erm Kevin Lisbie Scored a hatrick against Liverpool if I remember correctly and now is not anywhere near the Prem.
Neil Mellor scored from 40 yards against Arsenal and now struggles to get a game for Preston.
Some players will always be overrated in the game as players naturally dont always fulfil their potential. Players also have good spells or good games.
So you are judging Dirk Kuyt's in-game ability on one game he played against you?!! There are plenty of real life examples were an average player plays way above his level in the odd one-off game. Many clubs (esp. Liverpool) have signed a few seemingly off the back of some of those performaces (e.g. Senegalese internationals after they beat France in the world cup).
As for Derby I have no idea how all the research is collated, but I imagine it must be very difficult for every researcher of every club to manage to get all their ratings on a par with each other. Maybe researchers at other clubs have under-estimated their players too much, maybe the Derby researcher sees far more of their players than you do and knows they have some talent even if they haven't shown it, etc, etc, etc. If you want the game to exactly mirror real life then there's no point playing it!
kuyt on mine particular has scored 20+ goals a season. He's never done that for liverpool. Theres just so much wrong with players. For example in real life Scholes is probably the best central midfield player in the world, along with cesc but because he's 30+ apparantely he's no good. It was the same in the later versions of champ manager, zidane just wouldn't play great even though he was considered the best player in the world.
i think this is by far the most accurate database for players and the people who collect this data have done an amazing job. they always find little gems who develop to be stars on the game as well as real life. as for dirk kuyt? well who would have thought benjani wud be the leagues leading scorer at the moment? and as for derby? i support derby so im happy.
I was a researcher for SI for FM 2000/01 and 01/02. It isn't easy to correctly gauge the ability in real life with FM. I would praise all the researchers, as I know, it takes a long time for no pay (well, I got my game free) and without these people, the game wouldn't be worth playing. One or two may be overated, but generally SI get it right.
How many players have FM players discovered that have gone on to become top players? As for Kuyt, well he may not be consistent, but it is entirely reasonable he could have a worldy game against any team.

Overrated.. lets see.. Liverpool.. I always think that though.. so that might just be me :p
Other than that... most? If they lowered the skill level by like.. 10 a maradona type of player would be more dominant than they would be today. Considering 200 is max, and I'd rate maradona as 198 (which seems to be the level henry has gotten for some reason) so in my opinion the levels should be lowered or 225 or something should be max potential for regens (Maradona/Pele type of player)
