IIRC, Kuyt and Berbatov have pretty similar records in the Premiership in terms of goals per game. Despite this, I don't hear anybody complaining about Berbatov being overrated, even though he often smashes in the goals in FM. And if you look at his attributes, particularly his technical attributes, you can see he's nothing special, so I don't see how he can be considered overrated.

Also, has anybody considered that the match engine might favour players like Kuyt, making them seem better then they are?

A player that plays well in the match engine is a good player in the game's "reality"

Player's form can fluctuate hugely from season to season. Remember Marcus Stewart for Ipswich for one season in the EPL? I'm sure there are plenty of other examples that I can't remember at the moment. The point is, how on earth can you seriously expect every player in FM to have the same level of ability relative to every other player as they do in real life when real life players can sometimes look world beaters and other times look pretty naff?

I hate anyone who scores goals for Liverpool, Arsenal, WBA, Glasgow Celtic (Shaun Maloney...now there's a player who has been over-rated in many previous versions!) and no doubt plenty of other clubs in FM, but if those players weren't then the clubs would just sign some other goal machine I've never even heard of and the effect on my team's progress would be just the same.

Is it not feasible that the match engine can favour the skill sets of certain players? Take FM06 for example. Cisse and Fred, both very quick and strong strikers were able to score for fun, whilst technically better, but physically weaker strikers were never as effective. And in FM07, target men like Crouch seemed to be a footballing god because the role of the target maan was overpowered. Is it really that hard to believe that a more intelligent striker like Kuyt might be benefitting from the match engine this year round. I'm not saying this is definetley the case, but it certainly is a possibility.

It must, actually.

Any equation that produces outputs does so with inputs, and maps the two. And the mapping "favors" certain inputs, sure, if you want to put it that way.

That said, saying Kuyt is not overrated IN THE GAME because the match engine favors his attributes is moot, because we're talking about his output IN THE GAME, again necessarily produced by the match engine.

So, there's no disagreement on the "favoring" part, but there's disagreement on no overrating because of the match engine part.

A player that's been mentioned that i agree is overrated is Kuyt.

He's pretty much the best target man around in the game.
