Where exactly is this 'by-line' on the field. Is it the one on the left and right side... or the one at the ends where the goals are?

My ignorant-American understanding is that it's that part of the penalty area that parellels the endline (the "one on the end where the goals are").

Correct, the by-line is located next to the goals. Many a sunday league manager can be heard shouting to his hungover wingers that they should "get to 'kin by-line and then stick it int middle"

Correct, it is simply the goal line, orin USA parlance, the end line.
