Seeing as your DM to remain ultra defensive you'd be wasting Alonso playing him in that role and seeing as Gerrard can do a job on the right, play Mascherano as your DM, Alonso as your CM and Gerrard as your RM but if you want to use him in that role just give the same menality as the other midfielders and high creativity...

Totally disagree Alonso as DMC and with playmaker role will utilize him fully no matter if his mentality is defensive, especially if his forward run set to "mixed". His job is to 1)put pressure on opposition MCs and intercept balls 2)pick up lose ball; 3)start attacks; 4)dictate tempo; 5) offer pass options if everybody upfront is covered. To give Alonso more space when in posession, give Gerrard short farrow. Gerrard's role in this case would be (roughly) to 1)put pressure on opposition MCs; 2)offer pass option when attack starts; 3)offer short pass option to wingers; 4)support STs.
Imo, Mascherano in the game is much worse than irl, at least from creative point of view. I would use him as Gerrard sub when you want to kill the match, or as Alonso sub if Alonso is injured.

I assume he's on the Weegie update if Torres, Babel and Voronin are at Lpool but his tactics screen with all the lines arrows looks strange.
Am I missing something? Is that a type of skin? For a second I though the FM 2008 demo had been released
Although your post still raises a point; I got the WeeGie update and Evolution Skin onto my game because if you'd seen my other thread you'll know I had totally lost heart in the game. The new skin + update reinvigorated me.
Now I'm getting back into it again.
Amazing what a new skin can do....

Well it's working quite well so far, although I've only played a few friendlies so far.
I'd call this a "Tweakable" tactic.
What I'm doing is tweaking away during matches, making the overall formation more attacking or more defensive yet maintaining a rock-solid back line. I do this simply by moving the team mentality and tempo sliders; as this affects only the attackers, the back four stay put.
My LMF/RMF swap positions continually throughout the match, as do my two strikers - this seems to cause havoc and disrupts the oppositions ability to maintain their formation, or mark the right players on my team.
Also - throughout the entire match, my back four remain a solid unit, they never cross the half way line (corners excepted) whilst my attackers run riot. It's fun to watch and is exactly as I has anticipated.
Sadly, there's bound to be a down side, and this tactic will be no different; I'll enjoy it for the first 8-10 league games until the game "beats it" and I give up yet again.

I just find in a 4 man midfielder you need to have a pure DM, very defensive, low creativity, hard tackling and because Alonso lacks pace if you want to get the best - attacking wise/run the game/pull the strings, you need him playing futher up the pitch as your CM position...
But if you want to play Alonso deeper you MUST have your all defenders passing set to 'short', or else the ball will just by-pass Alonso and go straight to your more 'attacking' minded 5 players. And as for Mascherano he's averaged 7.5 for over the last two season and done a brillant job in that role - so much so I've sold Sissoko to Roma...
a destroyer if you like,

This is how the game works and you need to face it.
When you first start the game, the AI looks at you and says "ah, here's a little kid, no experience..he has no chance"
A couple of games later and you're staying to overachieve..."this kid is good he ain't no pansy, its not down to luck, he may actually be good"
By then the AI starts adjusting, your so-called tactic at the start of the game wasn't any good, it was just that the AI hadn't started treating you as a threat yet. Now that you are playing better the AI will look for weaknesses in your tactic to exploit. If you are any good then you should be able to identify those areas of your tactic that are weak, and do something about it
