TEAM INSTRUCTIONS
Focus passing down the flanks, Zonal marking - but I have my back four and my CM's on man marking (back 4 -tight) and Target man supply.
KEY POSITIONS The holding role/Makalele role
This season I tried using Gerrard playing in the more advanced role along side Alonso playing a bit deep but with more creativity and less focus on tacking and closing down the opponents. At first it worked beautifully but after awhile especially away from home I started to realise how important that holding role is to keep us very defensively sound at the back, whilst still have the full back and the other CM more attacking minded.
I think because both Gerrard and Alonso have excellent attacking qualities, Gerrard being excellent at making storming runs into the oppositions box and having brillant shot on him and Alonso’s pin point passing and amazing creativity . Imho it is easy to fall in the trap of giving them a partnership too much freedom to attack and create imho, just look at the England set up Sven and now McClaren they have both have gome for a centre mid pairing of Gerrard and Lampard. Same sort of problem they (Gerrard & Lampard) are both attacking minded and are best used in attacking role but without a holding midfielder in midfield you can bee left a bit thin and caught out going forwards.
It's also a trade mark of Liverpool of recent years, firstly Hamman, then Sissoko and now Mascherano. It's also given Rafa plenty of headaches as well, his anwers has been to play Gerrard on the right and have two defensive midfielders given him more stability in midfield with out having to play more defensive minded wide players and not wingers. This is the other reason I wanted to use the holding role in all my tactic's, in trying recreate the way the current Liverpool team under Rafa plays their football.
Who have I got playing this role this season?
Mascherano and Gerrard
Instructions Wingers and striker (leading the line)
Because my passing focused playing down both flanks and my central midfield is defensive minded, with Alonso playing in the creative/attacking CM position along side a holding midfielder my wingers are very important. My passing for my CM's is generally mixed/direct and that allows for Alonso to spray the ball left to right and dictact the tempo rather than just play a short passing type like Fabregas for example. Also the 'big pitch' theory is also why my wingers are so important, see in the late 1960s the coaches at Ajax FC developed the idea that the duty of a team is to make the pitch big when you have the ball, and to make it small when you don’t. Most attractive teams have more or less played to this maxim ever since.
This season both Mancini and Gonzalez have effectively been able to widen the pitch, and my striker thats leading line, despite sometimes finding himself offside, is simultaneously lengthening it. In short there’s much more room to play attractive football that I aim to play and that's why I think my Winger's and my Striker's (thats leading the line) is so important.
The main three setting that I've found that have help leagthen the pitch are having my striker set to cross ball at by-line and forward runs often and run with ball often. As for the wingers I would forward runs often, run with ball often and cross balls often has help widen I pitch the most but that is the main idea behind Ajax FC's 'big pitch' theory and we all know the type football Ajax played in their pomp.
Anyway back on topic, see these three positions have been big on Rafa's thoughts this past transfer window, the signings of Torres and Babel prove this.. both are young, quick and are intelligent - they know when and when not to make their runs forward, unlike Bellamy who got caught offside about tens for every match he played. So again this is the other reason I wanted to make these key positions/roles in all my tactic's, seeing as though I'm wanting recreate the way the current Liverpool team under Rafa plays their football.
