Having grown out of the limitations that a standard 4-4-2 can offer (ie lack of goals when dominating, no possesion in the centre of midfield etc) I decided to try and create a dynamic formation that would see me play attractive football and have my strikers score from the many chances I hope they would get.
My formation was a 4 3 3, with the wide players not only playing in the middle of the pitch, but also spreading wide when the chances permitted it. So on occasion i would have 3 in the middle and 3 in the box, at other times i would have a total of 6 wide players if fullbacks are included.
So that my wide attacking players could play all over the field, i gave them all high creative freedom, and my two wide forwards gave them free roles (hence why good players are needed for this tactic with good decisions etc).
I also didnt give them extreme instructions so that they could decide themsleves what to do as the opportunity arose (cut inside, come deep etc), although i gave all my forwards run with the ball, forward runs often).
The striker in the centre was to be the goal poacher and although the other strikers and midfielders have given me double figures, some over 20 in a season, it is the centre striker who will be top goalscorer.
The centre midfielder is kind of an anchor man, he needs good tackling and passing, ala gerrard, lucas etc.
I push the defensive line quite far up as i prefer the more compact short passing game although go a little more direct away. Also with a pushed up D Line i find I have more close range opportunites and turn off all long shots for ALL my players.
The defence man mark, centre backs tightly.
This is really good football to watch, as the players take on the opposition, score brilliant goals as well as tap ins and volleys from out wide.
With these two formations I think im going to win the treble with blackburn (knocked out of fa cup after playing weakened reserve side in semis) and am doing well with utd so far in a online game thats just started.
Try them for yourselves and perhaps I can tell you how i did it.
I have not made a counter or defensive tactic as such as I really only like playing as the bigger sides, but IF people find the above 2 successful, but struggle against big teams Im sure I can knock one up.
Using Atletico Madrid instead since using this tactic would make Chelsea's wingers useless. Using Weegie update. My current team.
GK: Leo Franco

DC: Luis Perea (sp? Can't remember name correctly)
MCr: Luis Garcia
MCc:Jean II Makoun
MCl: Luis Garcia
FCr: Diego Forlan

Sold loads of midfield deadwood and newcomers such as Simao to get Makoun and Zaccardo. First 5 matches of the La Liga all won comfortably though we haven't been really tested against a top side yet. Looking good so far. Will continue testing.
so good so far matt wit mufc first game chelsea in community shield [i played my reserves] 1-1 we won on pens 2nd game birmingham away 3-0 win [vidic sent off]3rd game 3-1 fulham at home we won 3-1 rooney is enjoyin the tactic 5 goals already in the league!!
Can still pick your wingers to play if they are good and dont want to sell them. For example ive played with both giggs and pederson left of the 3 mids and also often up front as the wide forwards, nani particalurly successful FCR.
ok mate it is goin ok although i am dropping at lot of pionts away not losing though just drawing but as long as i win the league it dosent matter yhe major problem is red cards i have had 5 in 12 games
Hi Matt, I've just started using your tactics and thought I'd report back on how its going. I'm Chelsea in season 2008/09.
Played 10, won 8, drawn 1 and lost 1 (aet). Scored 37, conceded 8. Though its worth noting that 3 of these games in which I scored 5 goals in each don't really count cos 2 were World Club Championship games and 1 was a FA Cup game against League Two opposition.
It is excellent at home, the striker in the middle gets so many assists. Plus I don't know what you did with the set pieces but my centre back has scored 4 goals in the last 3 games he's played. Away from home I'm yet to keep a clean sheet, my defence keeps getting caught out trying to play offside. I may take stop playing offside trap.
Overall though I'm enjoying this tactic, the chances created are considerable.
The set pieces are famous on here, I think wwfan made them or one of his bunch.
I let in a few away too but its the risk to take with attacking football i think. Ive adjusted the defensive line from time to time but had no affect. Maybe try removing the farrows from the full backs because most of the oppositions attacks come from thier wings it seems. I use farrows tho because its good to see the full backs backing up the attack.
