Rep Power: 0 | A couple of questions - answers please
Hi everyone,
I have a couple of questions that need answering please!!!
Does Team Mentality overide Player Mentality or is it vice versa or can the two work in conjunction with each other?
Secondly, when retraining a young players from MC to DMC if the new position comes up as Competent or Ineffectual does this improve over time (both players are 19) Similarly I have a AMC who is 22 can I do the same with him.
I play 5-3-2 so DMC is more important than AMCs
Any help gratefully recieved

Team Mentality and Individual Mentality can work together.
There are 21 notches on the mentality slider 1 and 21 are for Ultra defensive and Gungho attacking. If you choose either one of these two TEAM Mentality overrides individual mentality.
For all other settings individual overrides team. So if you have 4 for individual and 14 for team, 4 overrides 14
If you set team to 1 and individual is 19 then team overrides individual
The best way to set mentality up is to do this:
Have a split mentality, put defenders on defensive mentality duties and have the rest of the team on one mentality. That way you can always decide to use the mentality slider to make you team more offensive or defensive. Remember too that the dline affects your defensive posture when the ball is in your half so you will want to adjust this too. Generally speaking the more attacking you are the more you want to push that up.
Of course this is just one way of setting it up. There are other ways of doing it and they all work.
1. Set team mentality across the park. Yeah this works fine, but you can't really mess about with Dlines then.
2. You can set individual mentalities for all; this works fine too, but you will need to be aware of what effects your ingame tweaks can have
If you are playing a 532 you can afford to have really attacking mentalities for your wingbacks. Those DMs can also be given atttacking mentalities since you have so many players sitting inside the defensive line

opps...young players should play in the new position as well as train in the new position to get them to improve..they will gradually move from being incompetents to competents

Cheers mate, thought you missed that one. At what age can't a "young" player retrain.

I've retrained some of my players who are in there mid 20's.
Think it just depends on the players personality, a player who is said to be "highly professional" is more likely to learn a new position when there older.
check the players training overview screen to see if the player is happy learning a new position.

| With all respect, rashidi1, that is not what the manual says! And my experience (as well as Cleon's and some other people here) shows that even if all individual mentalities are set, team mentality slider affect the tactic quite significantly.
Not exact quote from manual, but something like: "individual mentality defines players position on the pitch; team mentality tells players how aggressive to be".
I believe there was a discussion on the topic and even some experiments done.

He asked if team mentality over-rode individual mentality and that was the answer I gave.
If you dig through GQ, and I mean really dig, you'll find a thread where someone pointed out the difference in the notches. The only slider that has 2 extra notches is the mentality slider.
I play with individual and team mentalities a lot, in fact all my tactics are based on using sliders. I don't make major changes in game, all I do is just move sliders, which is how I found this out. Anyways there's no point having this discussion now is there?...FM08 is coming out pretty soon...and well we'll see if my pov still holds. Once again its a point of view. I welcome debates as usual.
Incidentally the manual does not state categorically that it tells how aggressive a player has to be. It just states that it guides his actions. Cleon also stated that the team mentality helps to act as a kind of modifier, not as a defining attribute.

rashidi1,
What I actually meant is that even if you set all individual mentalities, the position of team mentality slider is still quite important. To me it is not over-riding. Though I totally agree that individual mentalities much more important and dominate team one
I think there was a thread by Leroy (???) where we discussed this issue, and quite a few other threads about individual-team mentality setting. Since I have been there before, and formed my opinion, I don't really want to dig through and find all details. The best example I can give though is Cleon's Sheffield United project. He has all players on individual settings, but varies (and quite successfully) the team mentality without going to the extremes (all out attack or all ultra defense).

Yes my point is that mentality affects 2 things in the game. The only people who know for sure are those who work directly with Paul C. Mentality affects positioning and it governs risk. Risk taking is broader. If the AI has an attacking mentality, it is more likely to play a forward pass then a pass sideways. A more defensive mentality can also affect the tackle a player makes.
There's more though I have to get back to work now...cheerz.
In FM2008 it could be more interesting.
