Default defending various formations

i found out that im able to defened very well against a 4-4-2 formation on a vesatile mentalities but i cant prevent teams from scoring when they play lone striker.

if anyone post the Opposition instructions for 4-3-3\4-5-1 formation ill be more than gratefull, since i just cant prevent scoring. ( at all. )

Assuming you're playing a 4-4-2, the first thing I'd do is play my two DCs differently.

For instance, have one man-mark the striker, low mentality, always close down, and the other play with an even lower mentality and close down less.

Also, it makes a big difference whether or not the target man is a 'fast striker' or 'strongman'. The Opp instruction are nearly opposite depending on their style.

Fast striker: never close down
Strong striker: always close down

etc..

Also, mark the fast striker with your fastest DC, a strong TM with a strong tackling DC...

im playing my CBs as you mentioned above, and yet when playing against 4-3-3 i cant prevent scoring.

u mean i should specific mark with a strong CB a strongman ( like drogba for example? )
and not tick tight marking the other CB?
what about tight marking on OI? againt 4-3-3 should i close down always + tm the striker?

Right. Thats where OI comes in handy : 2 DCs, but only 1 striker, so your instructions are on the striker rather than mixed on both DCs.

Strong TM (like Drogba, yes, but he's also fast, so its a tossup. Shearer is a better example): Either set up your DCs so one is shutting him down all the time, or set up OI to do the same.

OI for Strong TM: TM, CD-always.
OI for Fast TM: Never Close Down. No Hard Tackling.

Just my opinion, but I've seen similar in OI discussions on the boards.

My comments were for 4-5-1. 4-3-3 is usually quite different. With 4-3-3 I like to split the setups for the 2 DCs quite widely so that one of them is closing everything down (almost like a DM) and the other is more withdrawn, like a sweeper. This way if a winger slips through, or an MC comes forward, I have some cover. But its always a trade-off marking 3 players with 4. Very hard to get right in the best of circumstances.

Hey, you are not alone if you are having your head spun around by FM07 tactics!

All I was saying is that 4-5-1 and 4-3-3 are potentially quite different from a defensive point of view.

In 4-5-1 your threats are generally more central. Your 2 DCs can split time marking the TM. But in 4-3-3 your DCs are also cover for AML/R screaming in past your DL/DR. This is worth considering, is all I'm saying. I have no answers, only suggestions really.
