Ok having used the 433 to some effect last year I've now decided to create another tactic based on the same principles. Since the 4 man backline is more easier for most people to get their heads around I've decided to make a 424.
The principles are the same. I've taken the base template from the 433 and have just made some simple modifications. The 424 that the computer uses has two variants.
One is barrowed the other is not. I personally believe that using the nonbarrowed one is a receipe for disaster. Obviously the 2 MCs in this formation fulfill the same role the MC does in the 433.
There will have to be freeroles assigned to the wingers and one of the strikers and HUB for the deep striker as well as the 2 MCs.
Having created this I went on a tour of China..the team deserved this after lifting the UEFA Cup last season after all the odds...and I've heard the girls in Guanghzhou are worth the time and effort. After playing a 343 in the first game and a 3142 in the second we used the 424..we scored 8 goals in the first game and 9 in the second. I brought on a goalkeeper to play in the strikers role and even he scored. After settling in a "default" closing down, creativity, FWR, TTB, HUB, mentality, the only sliders that i change for the game were d-line, tempo and width Seems to work just fine. Need to see how it goes in early season play.

Our first away match of the season. Against Leicester.
Our last encounter in the previous season was a goaless draw at Penydarren Park. I made further tweaks to my formation to make it more effective by being given specific cross instructions.
Thinking that we would need a lot of space to enjoy the game, I decided to begin with a deep dline. After viewing the match for 10 minutes I noticed that we spent more time dropping too deep to defend, the midfielders were defending within our own half and that allowed Leicester too much space. I moved up my Dline to increase pressure and we scored the first goal. We went on to score 4 more and allowed 2 goals, which I don't really mind since these were down more to bad clearances.
Not a bad start to the season...a 5-2 win at home.

One question if you don't mind, what is the average pace of your defense? Is it best if they are quick considering the regular usage of a high Dline?

with your 424, do you have the barrowed wingers ALL the way forward, like the AI's desperation 424, or in the 'winger' spot as in stock 433?
personally i prefer beijing girls to guangzhou girls--taller, more educated, and often have bigger.... AHEM... vocabularies.
great thread btw.

| The average pace is 16. Hmm I don't always stay on high dlines throughout a game. Against chelsea I was on normal.
My 424 is barrowed FL/FR. After a great start to the season and beating Chelsea in the ESupercup..I'm now thinking of dropping it to a 442with Long Farrows

thanks, it confirms my suspicions
i swap the Dline to normal a lot if i score early so i don't keep it high the whole game either but early on in the game its either pace OR heading ability, so I'm conceding a lot from corners and headers |

I generally check the scout reports..since there are 2 DCs and in my setting one has a high closing down then the other...i place the one with higher anticipation on higher cd and the one on greater pace on lower.
Me 424 seems to look sweet at the moment..same principles though I do find if you go a bit psychotic and want the flanks to get overrun..you'll have your fullbacks on FWR often.
The same principles about playing around with dlines seem to hold for the 424.
What I've found is that:
1. You can place all on one mentality
2. Better to have staggered CD
3. Fullbacks must never be on Full FWR.
4. Pace is vital for this formation to succeed
5. HUB and Froles need to be used to make it even more effective.
6. The AI finds it just as hard to counter a good 424.
7. The 424 can easily revert to a 41221 which is even harder to penetrate.
