I'm impressed by FM2007, particularly the Job Centre, the Board deciding where they'll allow you to scout, to tour, etc...big step forward in LLM.
However, I'm now on the horns of a dilema and I'd like to hear the views of some LLaMas.
I've always believed that a manager takes some knowledge into a game, as shown in the game by the Club knowledge of Nations being influenced by coaches, scouts, AssMen and managers.
In the past I got round this by employing a scout of my Nationality (Scottish  ) and sending him solely to scout Scotland and only once a year, to mirror what would be my knowledge and contacts in the Home country.
Nowhere I am, managing in Norn Iron and there's no way to mimic those contacts or knowledge in Scotland as I can't Scout there, although a Scottish scout applied for a job with me.
In becoming a better, more realistic game FM's hobbled me in my take on realism in LLM.

(btw...I shan't now or ever use Player Search, it's merely a discussion starter)
Its something which I've thought about too, Ian. My reckoning is that, at the grass root level, you would realistically be scouting on a local level: after all, players are semi-pro with full-time jobs, so expecting Bob McTeacher to uphaul roots and ask the missus to follow him to Norn Iron for a £30 a week footie contract (and probably no job) is a tad unrealistic. That being said, it would be equally unrealistic to expect a player to come down to (say) Dorchester from up North for a £30 a week contract when he has a full time job so... um...
I know where you're coming from, Ian, but I do think the new approach is more realistic. It isn't perfect but I do think it is a slightly more refined approach than SYB or SWYCT.
Yep, I agree...and obviously Norn Iron isn't a good example. I reckon, though, that a Jock managing in Poofland or a Pooflander managing in Jockland would have a fair to middling chance of at least attempting to bring a protege with him.
I think that a home country only scouting restriction is pretty reasonable at the very lowest level. It would be quite hard to get someone to move based on the lure of
25 pound/week contract to play for an amateur side.
Maybe I'll have more to add once I actually get the new version. It's not entirely pertinent to the topic but it seemed way too easy to bring in players in FM06. I remember starting and quickly abandoning a game with Newport Co. in which I managed to bring in 22 players for free in my first two weeks on the job. Perhaps the scouting restriction is somewhat artificial but to me it really should be much harder to attract players to a club that is at the lowest rung of the football ladder.
I've been in Norn Iron for two seasons now, and my knowledge of there is half as much as my knowledge of Jockland Dergview's knowledge of Nigeria is hitting about 25%
Scouting is the best it has ever been, but there are still improvements to be made. Such as managing Weston-super-Mare, you can scout the north of England 300+ miles away, but you can't scout south Wales which is less than 50 miles away.
Plus what Ian said about not being able to scout your home country and Liam said about players moving hundreds of miles for crappy part time wages.
