I am not too sure about this. I have the feeling that this might have to do with the kind of players llamas tend to sign. We often have rather talented squads, sometimes even with a low average age. Not many llamas tend to strive for old and experienced players (because usually they cost more and who of us doesn't like to sign a boy that has "I'm that good" stamped on his forehead?).
So, elder and more experienced players seem to be able to better handle situations like surprise wins against better opponents. They don't take off and become complacent. They know that the next game will come soon and that you start with zero all over.
I let this theory influence the kind of players I signed in my current savegame and so far, I have not encountered any aquaplaning at all.
