You're the manager.
In short, if you want to manage your youth team, do so. My own experience tells me you're unlikely to find out anything about your opponents in the process, though.

As the original poster, you might expect me to agree with scouting other youth teams if you arrange a friendly but I don't.
I agree that, if you're watching you U-19's then you would be concentrating more on your own players than the opposition.
If anyone's interested, I did my first personal scouting trip recently. Went back home on my Birthday and watched Hearts U-19's lose 3-2 to Celtic. (I'm a Hearts fan and originally from Edinburgh, plus that's where my folks stay). Thought this would keep the realism part right and proper.
Agree with most peoples view that it's unlikey any of these guys would come to Wales but it's good to keep your options open in case I move back home....

Points taken on board with thanks.
I would point out that I'd be in charge of the game so I wouldn't just be there to watch my youngsters, I'd be seeing how they behaved when they line up my way rather than how my coach or assistant manager arranges them. Why he keeps playing my most talented young winger in defence is beyond me, the poor kid will be rubbish forever!
I guess where I'm coming from is that if some pipsqueak in Arsenal's (or anyone's) youth team sticks four past my reserve keeper, I might take a look at getting him on loan for a bit to show my lumbering forwards how it's done.
