Great thread rashidi. I think it highlights that people are over-complicating the matter, a lot of the info in rashidi's thread is pretty straight forward - praise good play and scold bad play. A determined, ambitious player will obviously respond better to being berated than a young, laid-back type, this is common sense so use it!
I have one question tho, what effect does the reputation of the manager have upon team talks?
I would of thought that a blasting from Alex Ferguson or Arsene would be better than a paddling from Ron Manager at Scumbag Utd, but how does the game feel about this? Did the experiments into team talk involve a highly respected manager who has been in the game for 15 years or a newbie with only non-league experience?

This is a theory mind you, but I've been noticing this a fair bit:
Your sides starting morale is a function of their: Ambition, Squad Personality vs your reputation.
So if you have a low reputation going into the game and the squad is ambitious and determined, you're going to get low morales during the start of a season and it will take you a far number of winning matches before you turn them around.
The more a successful a club you go to the harder then it becomes, as players tend to demand more there.
I believe as well that when you play against a team, its wise to look at : Tactical Knowledge and Motivational skills of the other mananger coupled with reputation this all affects how the team will play against you.

Is it better to leave them to your assistant manager or do them yourself?

Starr_Man5, if you're going to look for certainty in the game, you will never find it. I suggest you stop looking or you'll always get frustrated. I've offered more than enough information on how to handle teamtalks, sometimes I'm not sure.
I remember going into a match against a manager who had 18 for tactical knowledge and 17 for motivations. I was quaking. I knew I had to defend. His team was 4th from bottom, by any stretch of the imagination I should have been whipping them. My expectations proved right. The first 15 mins were sheer melodrama, as we drove wave after wave back. I waited till the 35th minute of the first half before I pushed up my dline, went narrow and quick tempo, one touch passing. We snagged a goal. I then dropped back and went counterattack.
Start of the second half, the AI comes back at me like Tyson. By the end of the match, my baiting worked, as I'd wait and then midway through change the tempo. At the end of the match we had something like 5 shots on goal vs the AI 25. But we won the match.
If I hadn't taken into account the AI manager and his skills I would have just gone in, with an attacking formation and gotten whipped.
All we have here are theories, its been like that since CM93 it'll be like that till FM2099.

| It works both ways...if you want to leave them to your ass man, make sure he has discipline, motivations, determination and tactical knowledge.
Its easier to do it yourself, cos there will always be times when you will find the assman saying the oddest things. Personally I suggest trying it out yourself, and getting the hang of it till FM2008 comes out..you do have time |

Rashidi1 - I know, mate, really I do. I was just adding my tuppence worth.
I don't play the game anymore, I've retired and un-installed, and I'm much the calmer man for it too... |

Team / media talks have a great impact on team morale, and morale has a great impact on team performance.
I have messed team/media talks many times but I had a couple memorable successes as well.
One was in my previous game when I had four losses in a row, and naturally low morale, coming to play away against the league leaders, still unbeaten after 10 - 15 games. I said (out of desperation rather than sense) that we would win that game, and we went into the game with high morale, won 1-0. Moreover the opponent hardly put us under pressure at all.
The second time was yesterday. We lost in the FA cup, one player apologized for his mistake for one of the goals, and half the squad got low morale. We lost 1-4 the next game and were facing one of the top teams in the division.
Their manager said they will beat us which further decreased the morale of some of my players. I felt I had to reply. I said that he will not get promoted and my team obviously got a boost of confidence. We won 3-0.
I cannot say for sure that team talks and media talks have changed the outcome of these games. However, team talks can have a great impact on morale.
That is why it is a good idea to take notes how your team reacts and to use this as a base for future talks, as Realmadrid suggests.
This is a gray area and I guess that is the way it is supposed to be. After all, it is very difficult to influence people; you never know how you would react to things, let alone how others will. And, FM is much more fun when you use talks rather than delegate them.
