im using man city playing a 4411 formationi create plenty of good scoring opportunities but i average possesion of only 45% each game. this leads to losses and conceading many goals especally against the bigger teams. the team defends using man marking and closing down is set at 10 for every player, passin is set to short with a slow tempo and narrow width. what do i do to get my team to maintain posession and defend better? please help was starting to become a problem for me in 07 aswell.

Maybe if you set your lone forward to hold the ball up it might help to keep the ball better. Other than that I'm not really too sure. Generally slow passing with a slow tempo should let you keep the ball. If you have counter attack ticked you could un-tick it, and your team will play possession football instead of trying to hit teams of the break.

Only other thing I can think of is to maybe play slightly more width so the team isn't as congested.

Also for possession if you are playing a defensive tactic limit the through balls you instruct to make as this will give the ball away.

And if you are giving through ball instructions consider the players attributes for passing and to a lesser degree anticipation.
