I cant very well condemn a game having not played it at all, so with nothing to do before the Football starts tonight, i thought i'd have a quick look?.

I used the very first tactic i found for d/load for 08, which is a simple 4-4-1-1.

What i've noticed so far...

There seems to be a controversial incident in almost every game, i complained the 1st time and the FA were silent, but have quit complaining as even blatant offsides are now seemingly considered not so by the FA?.

I have had a total of 14 goals disallowed for nudges and fouls etc, a massive amount in not quite 4 months of football i feel?.

After having a player sent off in one match, i found after making the substitution and the subsequent ending of the game i could not give an after match team talk, the correct screen just was'nt available?.

After a couple of months i found that Julien Faubert's injury was supposed to last approx 1 more day, but 2 months later and he is still injured and expected to return the following day?.

I have let in a staggering 8 goals from Green my GK kicking the ball straight to the opposition, i checked his instructions and there is no obvious reason for this?.

Like i say, this is all within 3 or 4 months of starting the Demo and it appears less than impressive?.

The FM testers in the Bugs forum have advised that they are looking at the number of disallowed goals at the moment.

If the demo was released to put paying customers off from buying the game, its certainly worked for me.

I've played the game substantially thus far and I have noticed a few significant flaws:

— The closing-down 'issue'
— Wide players running out of play
— Strikers kicking the ball out of play
— Defenders playing the long ball even on extremely short passing. I want to tell my defender "never play a long ball" but it's not possible
— Players only 90% fit after a 5-day break
— 'Making tactical changes' "stuck" for a whole half after making a slight tweak so I could not make ANY subs or changes for a whole half
— General 'buggy' 'choppy' feel to games. The games just don't 'flow' if that makes sense. You would expect an elite team set to short passing and a slow tempo would keep possession with nice patient football, but it just doesn't happen like that.

It seems as though the only significant change is the skin. Perhaps it was created to 'convince' paying customers that the game has massively changed. It's still 2007 though underneath with a few added superficial features such as the pitch-size feature and the match-flow, which was always there anyway in a different form. I like the interface though and the feel to the game, but the match-engine is in need of a patch immediately I think.

There are faults aye, but its more than just a skin update. Even with the bugs the match engine is 100% better than 07 already. FM never makes drastic changes each version they are all gradual. Oh and believe me the pitchsize is far from superficial......

I won't go through the whole thing...but you aren't doing something right in the game..

1. If the mentality is too low he will hoof
2. If you have him on the shortest of passing and the players are too far away in terms of mentality he will hoof
3. If you have him on form of mentality and he on ttb and the player is not withing passing distance he will hoof

4. I get my players to pass the ball around and then to look for the safe pass...so I hope you understand why I do not want to go through the rest of your post.

I don't face the problems you're facing now so I have to assume one of us is doing something right and another is doing something wrong. The instructions you give your players now have a far greater effect on their performance

Some further thoughts

There appear to be far too many controversial incidents compared to FM07- it is almost one per game at the moment

Have the players match ratings been adjusted? In 07, 8 was commonplace and 9 and 10 were regular ratings. In 08, I havent had a 10 yet and very very few 9's with 8 being the highest rating and even then few given.

On a lighter note, is it just me or have the long forward arrows on the team tactics screen been drawn ( badly ) freehand by a 5 year old? The diagonal arrows for a MC to go forward and one to go back are also parabolic rather than straight for some reason.

Hi guys,

Ok, my initial view on the new match engine apart from the closing down issue, is that it's quite promising.

The defensive line seems to be working properly. I am playing a line of 15, so pushing quite high up the pitch. What I like about it is my players are holding a high line and squeezing the opposition and containing them in their own half. So I am dominating games because of this.

My two central defenders are on man to man marking and also tight marking, so this seems to work well because they are keeping an eye o any potential bursts through the middle by opposing strikers.

Not had chance to play much with it, but it's just something I have noticed so far.
