It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

If reducing width means more people in the box, can you in any way set it for defense only? I would like to use my wingers to the full if possible.

No its global.

The only way to utilize wingers atm is to play really wide and focus play down the flanks sadly.

Global Settings - Are they applicable to defenders

I'm strongly of the opinion that global settings for mentality, closing down should not be used for defenders. The manual clearly states that its a good idea to have defenders on a lower mentality and I completely concur.

When settings DCs up the settings that Cleon has added are the best IMHO. But what's important in my opinion as well is the role the fullbacks play. The fullbacks should be closing down much higher than the DCs. Preferably around 12-15 would be good settings for closing down.

Barrows work fine for fullbacks as well, and the interesting thing about barrowed fullbacks is that its positional in nature. You could set their mentality at 12-14 and still get away with a rampaging fullback. Or you could reduce it, to play it more safe.

Hmm so if I were to read into this:
Mentality of fullbacks = the whole team but is the whole team = to the Central defender as well....cos what i'm saying is that the whole team can be on one mentality but...the DCs have to be apart from the whole team.

I can see where your closing down would be the same for CDs but does the whole team play on low closing down too? Or does the whole team in your set-up play on one CD?

I think it is possible for a whole team to play on high closing except for the DMC and DCs...it does work.

I need to get some second opinions on my setup soon, as I was about to give up on tactics and FM07 untill I got some pointers off nonleague, Cleon and rashidi.

tbh I dont think I've followed any of this advice save the one about view full match for periods to tweak according to that, not highlights.

but, I have 9 clean sheets in the last 11 with my penniless Perugia in our first season in the Serie B. Quite often I dont concede even when my team gets nothing but 6's and some 7's, so I don't really understand what has happened. I just tried to make one version of my tactic with only ttb's instead of crossballs, and all of a sudden I'm a title contender...

Sometimes changing just 1 little thing, no matter how small you think it is, can have a dramatic change on your tactic. Something so simple like changing someones closing down, can make you go from conceeding 2 a game to 0. Its a nice feeling when you stumble upon something though

aye, I like the feeling, but I'm a bit put out by the effect. I've been struggling for over 2 seasons, tweaking and improving my 433. I changed my wide strikers from crossing often to rarely and upped ttb to often. Same with my two offensive midfielders.
right and left backs changed from crossing and fwr mixed to crossing often, fwr rarely. Now I hardly concede, even though opposition has lots of shots. And my right back is blossoming like mad. assists a-plenty, 15-20 interceptions and so on.

amazing keeper as well though. Antonio Mirante from The Old Drugged-up Lady.

Now I need to figure out how to increase my shots on target from normally less than 25%, but this will have to wait untill the injuries permit me to use another than my third choice striker.
