hi everyone,
continuing my career with villareal i noticed that an easy way to gain possession is by setting your players this way:
Defenders - pass short and RARELY on everything
Fullbacks - FWR often, RWB mixed and cross ball often\mixed ( depends on how skilled your fullbacks are.
Defensive Midfielder - FWR rare, RWB mixed\rare, passing first notch of mixed, TTB often and cross rarely.
this is the defensive triangle and by this you could keep the ball for hours.
now my question splits for 2 parts:
1.) should a winger make FWR often in order to get into offensive positions, and should a winger TTB ? ( because when he does, he stops running with ball and basicly stucks your attack ) and how would you set wingers for Home\away?
2.) is it even possible to play possession against a better team ( lets say barca\Real.M\Valencia ) on home?
and is it any kind near reality to play possession football using a playmaker on away games?
i tried watching full games and i couldnt find a clear answer.
1) It depends on what you want from the wingers really. Here's something I wrote in another thread yesterday;
Quote:
Remember that 'cross from' plays a bearing here too depending on what you wnat them to do. If the winger are decent dribblers but might not possess the abilty to beat people i'e Beckham type of player then get him to cross from deep.
If its a fast player in the mould of Shaun Wright Phillips with lots of pace and acceleration, or a player like Ronaldo who is very technical and can beat his marker and others with ease then encourage them to run to the byline to cross.
I play with width of about 17 and focus passing down the flanks and a normal passing game. I like my wingers to come to the halfway line to recieve the ball as they have lightning pace and acceleration and scare the opposition when they start running at them. But when I play my slow back up wingers I instruct them to make forward runs as they need a head start due to the lack of pace.
Theres many ways you can go, but it depends on how you want them to work and the ability they have. Play the wingers and fullbacks to there strenghts at attacking and they should give you width you need.

Aye I have them set up on the first notch of normal mentality too and give them no forward arrows. This allows me to dictate exactly which areas of the pitch I want them to be in and recieve the ball. The rest is all down to there stats once I give then run with ball and cross from byline. Giving them farrows and forward runs makes them be too high up the pitch. For me my wingers do the real damage around the AML/AMR positions. Were as if I gave them farrows and FWR's they'd be in this position all ready and marked before they even recieved the ball.
But by not using farrows and fwr's it allows me to let the wingers make there own space and time. I often see players pick up yellows and red cards and give away dangerous freekicks. Everytime they go forward you know that they can do something dangerous.
You can have a winger do TTB's if you want. But I prefer to cross more instead if the wingers are good enough.
I play my wingers same wether home or away. I just set up my wingers to play how I want my team to play.
2) If you have a player who is quality like Kaka, Pirlo etc then yes you could benefit from using a playmaker but you'd have to make sure that the player is capable of creating something from nothing. He needs to be an intelligent footballer if you are to get the best out of using a playmaker.
You can also have lots of possession against any team. But for you to have a great deal of possession you have to ensure the players you use are capable of keeping the ball and that they wont give it away easily when pressured.
Then you need to look at your instructions you use, you'd need to play a slow/short game for a good possession game.
1) Well I would always instruct my wingers to make FWR and TTB depends on what you want your winger to do. I prefer my wingers to dribble and cross so i remove their TTB instruction.
2) I can answer this partly in that I've never used a playmaker. But as far as playing possession football it is possible if you play to your teams strengths but dont go too attacking as this will present counter attacking opportunities against you
Riquelme is definatly the calibre of a player to hold the playmaker role, the instructions i gave him :
fwr - mix
rwb - mix
shots - often
ttb - often
cross - rarely
free role
high CF and 2 mentality 12
i want my team to play through the playmaker ( pires might be stand-in for riquelme if injured, usualy playing left wing )
to the wings, so pires and cani can bring their skill into game.
how would you set that on instructions? i really wan to understand for once how its done.
both pires and cani are mediocare physicly - only 13 pace, so are they capable of dribbling through opposition? 17-18 dribbling stats and high technique.
For me a playmaker is someone who dicates play, so I wouldn't want him making forward rund or running with the ball. As id prefer him to play others in and be an intelligent footballer who is always looking for the pass. If you ask him to run with the ball then he could be wasting good attacking options as he'd be running with the ball instead of passing. Same with forward runs, id want my playmaker to be as far back as possible so he could dictate the game lower down the pitch.
For me thats what a playmaker is all about. I prefer my playmaker as a DMC/MC rather than a AMC.
I don't understand why someone would ask someone to be a playmaker then ask them to run with the ball etc as this is a confliction imo.
so ill make him fwr and rwb rarely, fine.. now how do i bring wingers to game without DM\AMC playing through balls that defenders always head them away? and would you instead of me increase width? or get the defensive line deeper\higher?
cleon i seem to struggle badly on away matches as I cant grab a goal, when i watch the game it seems like my team has no gameplan, as i cant use playmaker and counter-attacked ticked.
i wont start using a target man just for away games cuz it seems very stupid for me, do you have any suggestions how could my team possibly play away games? i got like 3 playmakers ( riquelme, pires and hernandez ) but i dont know what to do with them
