Just started a game with Man Utd on the 08 demo, usually play 4-4-2 with Man Utd but after reading people's views on their wingers I have been playing 4-5-1 with a long front man, wingers pushed up to AML & AMR with a man in behind the lone striker playing in a free role.
I have the 2 winger and AM with often on froward runs so the front man isn't isolated.
I currently have the forward on mixed forward runs in the opinion that this will make sure I have someone's feet to hit up there instead of him always thrying to get in behind. Worked ok in friendlies but the whoever plays up top hasn't been that good in the league yet, rest of the team has been good.
So any advice on whether mixed or forward runs would be best for thsi formation?
I've been playing with Utd in a 4-2-3-1 system. I've found that the lone striker has been struggling too. I mostly start with Rooney there, FWR mixed (set to 'often' leads to too many offsides). I put Rooney in the target man list and select 'to feet' in the team instructions supply.
I think this is pretty much as good as it's going to get. Rooney and Tevez don't have the heading ability to bury crosses in from my wingers and therefore their potential ratings as a lone striker are somewhat limited (in my system anyway). I find Saha a much better option to head in crosses - at a cost of less movement.
So my advice is stick with mixed forward runs - it's the formation and his limitations for heading in crosses that are limiting his ratings. If you want to switch to a style of play which is through the middle, and negate crosses all together, I could see this helping to improve his ratings.
I have been playing rooney there with tevez in behing, saha still injured and bought Huntelaar. haven't bothered with using him as a target man and play short passing so might try target man to feet which might help.
