Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

I haven't had a complain about this game until just now. Playing Man City with a two goal lead, they scored in the 80th minute and immediately I knew they're gonna score again in stoppage time(been here too many times ) I set to ultra defensive, removed counter attack, time wasting maxed and defensive line deepest. Needless to say they still scored. What's the point of the tactics then?

Oh, and I subbed in two defenders after they scored.

attack is the best form of defense?? Your paranoia allowed them to go at you and they scored a lucky goal??

When I'm up 2-0 and they score late against the run of play I usually won't bother changing my tactics to try and preserve the lead. If the tactic was dominate enough to get the 2-0 lead it will hold it. Though my standard tactic has the fullbacks with instructions such that 4-2-4 doesn't affect us anyway.

I hate the idea of playing ultra defensive to secure a lead in real life and I'm glad to see it's downsides are accurately portrayed in FM.

I understand your frustration, but you basically challenged the other team to attack you without fear of reprisal at a time that the momentum had just swung their way with a late goal... You might as well have told your players to all form a human wall in front of the goal and allow the other team to slam against it for 10 minutes and see if it falls.

Sure, sometimes it works. But I'd rather play straight up and kill the game by holding onto the ball.

I've tried that in the past and the same thing happens...I've only been using the defensive approach mentioned above recently.

Thing is, once they score a goal, most of the time they seem to be on fire; either its their mentality or they've cracked my formation. From then their number of shots rise faster than the price of oil

Usually when the AI is down and trying to get goals to get back into the game, they will switch to 4-2-4 and look to hit you with counter attacks.

Whenever the AI does that and provided they are already constantly testing my GK, I lower down my FBs' and wingers' mentalities, lower the defensive line and set width to narrow. By doing so your defenders will watch out for counter attacks and midfielders will provide more support in defending.

What I think is by making a dramatic change in tactics especially during a match, does not help you defend the lead.
