After playing CM/FM games for years I thought I would try playing LLM and going by the rules 100%. I have come up against a real stumbling block...scouting. I am almost done with the first season and I have only signed two players so far. The first player came from the first scouting trip. On the second scouting trip the Scout recommended a player that had "1's" in more than half of his attributes and I passed on him. However, after a couple more weeks and my team being over 50% injured I went back and signed him, which was against my Assistant Managers opionion. The Scout ended the third trip by saying that he couldn't find anyone and now he is about a week away from winding up a three month trip and he hasn't found anyone yet again. In the meantime, all the other teams seem to be signing free agents left and right.
I am playing Newport County in the South Conference, which Frank recommended. I am sitting in 21st place. I don't mind losing at all and when an occassional win happens it makes it all that much better. But if I can't stay above the relegation line I will lose control of the team.
I am playing FM 2006, more specifically WSM 2006, and from what I am reading it had serious scouting problems. So how do I get around this problem if I can't use any find buttons?
If you're playing with anything short of Huge database, you may well have problems with your scout(s) finding anyone rubbish enough to join your team.
My memories of FM06 aren't very good, but you could always try arranging friendlies against non-league teams and see if any players catch your eye - if so, send your scout to have a look at them.
In WSM 2006 there are four database sizes: hugh, large, normal, and small. I know for sure I didn't pick hugh. Most likely it was large, I can't seem to go back and see exactly what it is. If database size is that important in terms of scouting then I guess I am screwed. I stayed away from the hugh database because my computer is only a P4 1.8. As I stated earlier, the NPC conference teams can sign free agents at will and I can't so under these conditions I guess I can't go on. I'm glad I asked for advice now during the first season and not way down the road.
WSM 2007 has been ordered. I usually buy a new version every couple of years but getting more game speed and better scouting sounds good and I want them NOW! Thanks all for the advice...
I favour a DIY approach to finding players at this level.
Try finding players with the player search screen. Make sure the 'Ask assistant to filter out unrealistic targets' is not ticked (else you might not get any players listed). If you're playing a lowest-of-the-low LLM team, you probably won't have any transfer money, so just set 'value' to 0. I get several pages of players (ok, using a large database), and select those I might sign by looking at their history stats and then getting coach reports.
Most players won't want to come to your club (especially if you're Ramsbottom or Bacup), but a few will, enough to make a team.
My one and only scout has a 1 for judging player ability and a 1 for judging potential, by the way. I advertised for another scout, and the best applicant. based on attributes, only managed a 4 and 3 respectively.
To actually win matches and do well in the league using a complete build-it-yourself team is VERY rewarding.
