I don't think this counts as tactics, but if it does then mea culpa.
Lately I've become more frustrated with guys in the reserves not being match fit/being subbed too early/etc. I've thought about taking over the reserve matches and just speeding through them, but that seems like a commitment I'm not ready to make at this point...
So do you manage the reserves? Do you watch the entire game?
No, it's enough of a job managing the first team. Of course I'll keep an eye on the players in my U-20s (no reserves in Italy) to see if any are showing some promise, but no more than that.

Same here. If my reserves and/or U18's don't have friendlies, I'll set them up games against non-leaguers all season.
Around mid season sometime I'll look at the squads and see who's playing well (i.e. averaging 7 or over) and consider giving them a little stint in the 1st team... that is of course if I'm not desperatly fighting relegation and don't want to risk it.
One thing that does hack me off tho... is when a new season starts, I can't go back and look at my players non-competitive stats from last season.
If I forget to look at the end of the season, how am I meant to know who played well and who played like tosh?
I've started sorting the reserves and U18's by rating at the eof of the season and taking a screen shot to capture their ratings, but I don't always remember to do this AND it's not practicle(sp?) to get switching out of FM to look at a players previous seasons rating.
