it seems to me that the barca model is mixed-short passing, with normal-slow pace, but with a lot of creative freedom to almost every player on the pitch. therefore the players can seize an opportunity in case it arrives...

After reading many and varied opinions of how best to implement a working and consistently effective counter attacking tactic wihin the FM game, it would seem that there is one main problem to resolve.
Within the FM game there are differing views on whether it is required to play slow and short or fast and wide. More or less!,
However, in the real world, One of the best counter attacking teams that I've seen, was Brian Clough's excellent Nottingham Forest.
As I remember, the system was to play "slower" when not in possession and fast when in possession.
When they were not in possession, only the two wingers, Tony Woodcock and John Robertson would remain around the halfway line on each wing. The rest of the Forest side would align themselves into two banks of four across the pitch. They would move around the pitch within the shape of a rectangle and mindful never to lose that shape.
That was the "slower" method of play. it was kept up until possession was gained. Then the fast part came into play. The ball would moved at great speed to one of the afore mentioned wingers and the "counter" was duly sprung.
This is were the problems may lie in trying to fit the counter attacking system within the FM game. It doesn't seem possible to make a team play slower and then change to fast, on gaining possession, within the concepts of the game. Indeed, I am not sure that it is possible to do so. I would leave that to the games makers to try to answer.

i think that this is exactly the problem. maybe there should be a seperate orders system for 'defence' and 'attack'...

When you defend deep and don't use pressing, then you're already playing slowly when defending aren't you?
The thing I wonder about is should you use a wide formation and passing down both wings or not? Or does this depend on where your pacey players are (e.g. wingers play down flanks, strikers down the middle)?
