First off, I would like to apologize for asking where to find a tactic, I didn't realize that was against the rules! Hopefully asking for help is not though.
To tell you a little about what I'm looking for, I want to create a tactic that is consistent at home and away (I know it will be tough and I realize that I won't win every game) and I am new to creating tactics. I know I'm a little late, but I won't be able to get the new FM until Christmas.
The other main point I would like to make is that the tactic must produce free-flowing, attacking football, like the good old gung-ho days, and (to set myself a hard challenge) for the tactic to work at a variety of different levels and standard of league. Is there any decent (but relatively short) reading material to get myself started? (I am aware of the various help guides but am unsure as to where to start) Also, how would I go about testing the tactic, by which I mean choosing a good variety of teams etc.)
Could I also ask for details of any personal experience please? Thank you in advance.

Have a look in Here and you can read what many users use as their bible about tactics building. It is specifically for FM 07 but in the Unofficial Tactics Bible thread at the top there are others about 08 by Rahidi1 which are also a good read.

Creating a 'Total Football' Tactic - Help Please! Post #3
total football is my favorite but i have not managed to apply it wit FM(YET!!!!)
I play 4-1-4-1 but i prefer the midfielders to have good finishing, the DM to have good passing, creativity( i mean players who can play in diff positions and i change them during the game.)I play high (often)or normal d-line(never deep),i use the farows, barows and lot of throw balls even from the defenders.
I am still experimenting,and i dont have the results i want(But i take conference teams0
Any suggestion from the experts(cleon-rashidi)would help

Firstly: do you mean Total Football as in Cruyff and the Dutch national team? If so that could be pretty hard to impement, I've been trying to do something similar for a while now. Maybe we can share some ideas.
Secondly: It's going to be hard on FM 07 to create a consistent home and away tactic because the AI responds differently home and away. But it is possible to create a tactic with slight variations home and away that can be very successful. What formation do you want to use, and what team?

in actual fact, total football requires all outfield player to be tactically knowledged. they attack and defend as a team.
some times ur team need defenders who are also good attacking attributes and attackers to have good defending attributes. So basically u need 6 or 7 players attributes to be good techically and defensively. then try playing short passing, high creative freedom and high tempo. well this is my suggetion only.

That is what I meant. Like I say though, I want a challenge!
In actual fact, I spent a few hours making a tactic last night and although it is not quite the 'total football' I am looking for yet, it produces some really fluid attacking moves. I'm currently testing it and if it does well I might release it.

How was it defensively. I also sat down for a few hours making one last night, but while it was defensively very strong, there was no attacking intent at all, despite the players having high mentality. Maybe the opposite of what you got?

It depends on what exactly do u mean by "total football" ... all in attack and all in defense? It's a good idea, nice, risky...but you really can't do that. That's what I was trying to do in FM 07, my first FM , and I was always being caught on the counter attack, the opponent had a fast striker waiting and beating the offside trap. Then, when I was hired at Roma, I started to think "Italian". Fast, creative football, with wingers in attack, midfielders being involved in attacks, and CB's going at the middle line since i was putting pressure on them. Well, it sounds nice, it was exciting, but when I got to play good experienced teams, I was ceonceding too many, although scoring many too. For example, I played Real Madrid in the CL round of 16 like this, and lost 1-2 at Bernabeu, then won 1-0 at Olimpico. I advanced, but met Barcelona next. Lost 0-1 at Camp Nou and won 3-2 at Olimpico. => not enough to qualify. Then I thought, why attack and not wait for them to stay properly on the pitch...that way I don't have to deal with their strikers and midfielders defending, just their defenders and goalies. So I play more careful, but still show off, as I have high quality players that can make the difference. I developed free kick and corner techniques, beating the offside trap etc. And my players dont get overexhausted.
So maybe you should not really go all out attack if you want performance. I won 7 consecutive Serie A titles out of 9 attempted with this tactic, and 2 consecutive CL I had the most goals scored in every season, and was 2nd or 3rd at the least goals conceded.

If you want Total Football the best way to go about it, tactically, is high creative freedom. This will give the players the flexibility to "flow." I don't think an attacking mentality across the board is the answer.
The players you use are important too. If you are going to give them creative freedom their mental attributes will be important (decisions, anticipation, concentration and team work). Players need to have the football intelligence, especially in defense to fill gaps and cover for their teammates.
