I would like to know if it makes a difference what position the Tactics screen displays the players.
The position that the player appears on the tactic screen pitch: is it an absolute instruction of how the player will play, if he does not change his mindset, or if you play a winger in a full back role will he still play like a winger re his mentality?
Is the position just an indicator of where the player is best suited on the pitch to help with team selection? Or will some of the players stats be reduced if he plays out of position and how far out of position.
So if you play a Striker as a forward will this have no reduction in his playing stats or say will putting a winger in a wing back position affect his game. Presumably putting a striker say in midfield will that alter his playing game?
I realise that putting them in their best position is always the first choice but if you have injuries or a small squad then needs must.
Players will follow instructions set for the position (unless they have much creative freedom). It means if you put DC to ST position, he will play as ST. The only question is whether a player can fulfill the duty. For instanse, if you put a winger with low positioning, tackling, marking, jumping, and heading stats (not very important attributes for winger) into DC spot, you cannot expect him to play very well.
Hope it helps.
P.S. I sometimes use a strong DC with good jumping and heading stats as a ST (TM) and it usually works fine.
