It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default creativity for central mids

I'd like some feedback on how the creative freedom bar affects players passing.

for example, if i have a very creative d-mid like banega, and want him being creative with his passes, but not roaming all over the patch, can i still give him a fairly low "creative freedom". or will his passing be affected as well?

i'd love a bit of feedback on this issue.

AFAIK, creative freedom should be used sparingly, only for 1 or 2 players, as it will reduce their ability to adhere to your tactics. Kinda depends on the situation.

If you're under heavy pressure from wave after wave of attacks by Barca/Arsenal/[insert top team here], you might wish to limit creative freedom so that your whole team acts as a disciplined unit.

On the other hand, you might find it difficult to break down a defensive side, setting creative freedom to a high setting for a number of players might unlock the opposition back 5 with an unusual pass or move.

if you want one player to do creative passing, but leave his creative freedom in general lower, then maybe high trhough balls would be an option.

I think creative freedom needs to be distinguished from free role, which would let him "roaming all over the pitch" and basically do whatever he deems to be the right thing.

creative freedom should not really affect his position much, more his choice of variety from your tactics, e.g. playing that killer pass.

cannot entirely agree with you here, I have 2 AMCs on very high creative freedom, my striker on pretty high CF and depending on who is playing 1 or 2 wingers as well. Seems to work fine.

I wouldn't give a DM a high CF they need to be very disiplined, maybe raise his TTB's to often.
That should help to get some use out of his creativity.
Also look as his prefered moves he might have: Tries Killer Balls Often which is always a good one to have for any creative DM. If he doesn't then why not buy an older DM with this move and get him to tutor him so he can learn it.

It's all very dependent on the players, the positions they play and most of all the opposition they are against.
Having your creative players on a high CF against a poor team is fine, but against a better team they will struggle to express themselves.
I tend to follow that principle.
Against a weaker team I let my attacking players have more CF but against an equal or superior team I tend to lower it as I want them to be more disiplined.

But as the OP asked about CF on a DM I would always have it on low, usually the same as my FB's.

I have been toying with an idea for my central midfielders - the passing is first notch on the scale (short short) with forward runs mixed for one and often for the other and Through balls often for both. Creative Freedom is last notch on little. Mentality is usually left as team.

They have many key passes but problem Im experiencing is number of bookings and the fitness levels drop more than the rest of the team. But thats something im working on!

Dependant on the individual player you could have Long Shots as often which helps greatly.
