I am aware of that, Nobby, but being in an offside posistion but making no attempt to get to the ball or close down on the defender is not an punishable offside according to Focal points from Fifa. According to reggie's comments about his strikers posistions they had no chance to pressure the defender or play the ball and therefore not offside.Fifa are more and more moving towards that players need to touch the ball to be offside and this was even tried at U17 World Cup 2 years ago. In that cup beeing in the goalkeeprs line of sight while in an offside posistion was not offside unless they touched the ball.

From iajafer's FA rules post:

There is no offside offence if a player receives the ball directly from:

* a goal kick or...

This seems pretty clear: no offside since my MC received the kick directly from the keeper. From this, it sounds like even the MC could have legally been "offside" -- that is, past the defenders.

I didn't see this in iajafers quote, so I'll add that you can not be penalised for offside if the OTHER team passed the ball.

I know that's covered by the 'goal kick' part of the post, but thought you may not know this as a yank. (you could get your own back and see how many of us guys know what 3rd down is :cool: )

No - a goal kick is not any old kick from the keeper, it is when play is restarted by the keeper after the ball has crossed the goal line (but not into the goal) having last been touched by an attacking player.

The only chance of there being an off-side is if your MC was originally trying to pass to one of the off-side FC. As the MC received the ball from the GK in the second instance then there’s no chance that any one was off-side, as an opposing player got the last touch.

Unfortunately you can accurately quote every rule and guidline in every book ever written on the subject.

The fact is offside occurs when the ref either agrees with a flagging linesman or decides himself that it is so.

No offside decision was or ever will be reversed after a match.

All submitted points become moot :cool:

About 5 years ago, I understood the offside rule and laughed at everyone who couldn't. Now I'm not sure there is a single person on this planet who understands it, and I include the t**t who last reinvented the rule in that.

As Sir Brian Clough, rest his soul, once said, if a player isn't interfering with play, he shouldn't be on the bloody pitch in the first place.

You're right, of course. Thanks for setting me straight. And here I thought it was finally settled.

kriss--

...moot...

Yes, but the intent of my original post was to figure out if the actual call ("not offside") was correct. I think it was but I'm still not absolutely sure.

And, by the way, thanks everybody, it's an interesting discussion. It distracts me from my 80 percent relegation rate.

Quote:
A player in an offside position is only penalised if, at the moment the ball touches or is played by one of his team, he is, in the opinion of the referee, involved in active play by:

* interfering with play or
* interfering with an opponent or
* gaining an advantage by being in that position

That's why the goal stood, correctly. The MC who lost the ball to the opposing player or the 2 strikers could all have received the ball and scored with no problems as it was the opposing keeper who passed the ball to them, they cannot be deemed offside.
