I know I get annoyed when I bring on a sub keeper (for whatever reason) and he makes one save in the entire time he's on but still gets a rating of 9, and MoM - does this still happen on FM2007?
On your keeper question, my data set on substitute keepers is pretty small but I haven't noticed that problem in FM07. I could just possibly maybe sorta perhaps understand an 8 rating IF the save was brilliant AND the team scored 3 goals after he came on. That's because team success ripples throughout every player's rating (as it should). The MOM is simply a reflection of the high rating. If the rating waw lower, he wouldn't get the MOM.
Overall, except for my concerns noted above, I think FM07's ratings engine is considerably improved over previous versions. Specifically, I do remember cases of subs getting very high ratings for playing ten minutes in older versions.
I've found the opposite with defenders actually - if the commentary blames them for a goal, no matter what else they've done in the match, they'll rarely rate higher than a 5. This even id they've made all their passes, intercepted themselves to death, and not missed a header all game.
If anything, I think defender mistakes are taken into account too much in FM 07. It's happened more than once that one of my defender is defending very good, makes a stupid mistake in the last ten minutes which is either a goal and his rating drops to 5, or it's saved and it doesn't have much overall effect.
I then feel guilty for telling him I'm disappointed while he's had a pretty good game except for the mistake.
I do believe the keeper rating system is some way of. In FM 07 my keepers get low average ratings, mainly because of the fact that the AI seems to score alot having few chances, leaving him little opportunity to make up for goals against. Or I'm playing so good that the other team can't get a shot on target (Bragging :eek. This is in contrast with earlier versions, where my keeper usually had one of the top 3 highest avg. ratings (this may have something to do with the fact that I didn't really pay much attention to tactics in earlier versions, thus getting more shots against ).
Overall I'm pretty pleased with the rating system, although there are still improvements to be made over the keeper rating system.

I remember Ian complaining about that ages ago - in FM06? I remember seeing that a couple of times but not in my current FM07 save (I think).
Yeah, I've seen that too but it generally makes sense to me -- goals are the object of the game. If you let one in, it should be hard to redeem yourself. Maybe the defender could get up to a 6 but not a 7, particularly if the goal is the game-loser. 10 attaboys = 1 D'oh!

It's amazing how you get to remember the occasional post out of all the <STRIKE>dross</STRIKE> chaff that's normally posted here.
It seems to me that it's possible for defenders to redeem themselves. I had a defender cause an ugly goal against me, and his rating dropped to a 4. He scored two headers though in the second half and he got an 8 and MoM.
As for global ratings: I think it depends on the way your team plays. I have a rather defensively oriented team and so my (mediocre) defenders have no trouble with an average rating of almost 7 or higher. I have a tough time though to find a forward who can even get close to that rating.
