I have just started my first game on FM07 (after not being able to stop playing my game as Dorchester manager in FM06!).
I am struggling with the scouting and have a query. The hard part is asking it in a way that is not asking for tips and that can actually be answered!
Basically I am managing Baza who are a backwater team in the depths of Spain. I have one mighty Scout who seems to be dead! After sending him out to scout Spain he didn't even come back with a single report before the window closed. Helpfully, now it is closed, he is starting to return reports although they are all for players way out of my grasp.
Therefore I am stuck with the drose I inherited until Jan. No big issue but how did you guys get new recruits in at the beginning of games??
I see some people offer trials to players but how do you choose which players to trial without breaking the LLM guidelines??
Is my scout crapper than usual and you were all offered realistic players in time?
Some players use the player search screen and employ the filters to display only home-based-players that are unattached.
When you have no other source of players, this might be a valid option if you offer trials and/or send out your scout(s) to get a quick glance at them.
Also, there might be news items saying that club XYZ is interested in signing free agent so-and-so. If it's a rival club, why not jump in, send a scout, and if the player is worthwhile, sign the guy before the other one can?
There are quite some things that are realistic and thus are deemed appropriate. Let your own conscience be the key.

I assume you are getting your info from the <STRIKE> stories </STRIKE> updates on the board?
Unless they are posted by an established LLaMa, I'd be taking the <STRIKE>stories</STRIKE> updates here with a grain of salt. Most here are made by people who do not follow the guidelines at all, or are at best following them after bending the guidelines into a twisted piece of doctrine to suit their own needs. It is so easy to see, bleeding obvious actually but I can't be bothered picking holes in their <STRIKE> stories </STRIKE> updates. There is one here that annoys the **** out of me, cause they used the same side as I did, and there is NFW the team could get promoted, let alone be champions of the league in season one...but I digress
The first year is just a year to survive. Nothing more. Survive relegation in your first season and you have done your job. If you use the guidelines with your scout, by the end of the first season, you might have a short list of 10 players who you would love to sign. If you get one of those ten, you have done well. Build your reputation in the next couple of season and they will come.
They say Rome wasn't built in a day. The same with a LL side. Patience and perseverance is the key. Your scout will bring back reports of a lot of players. Most will not be worth wiping the arse of your reserve Goalie, and expect a lot of dross in that first season. The idea in Season 1 is to get depth in your positions. Do that you wll set the platform for a launch at promotion in year 3 or 4.

Have a read of the guidelines thread, kov.

Some LLaMa’s use the search screen to shortlist players in their area and then send off their scouts to find out how good a player he really is.

The exceptions are loans, in which it’s acceptable to use the player/staff search using minimum filters (e.g. for loan, free)in an emergency.
So, it's all up to the player whether he feels that he's in an emergency or not.

Thanks very much. All makes perfect sense and they were indeed the cheating stories I was referring to!
That was my point about not breaking the guidelines by offering players trials. If you do player search for unattached players I would imagine there would be hundreds or even thousands of players in there.
How do you pick which ones to offer trials to?? Why the players with the highest value attributes of course!!
Right, gloves off and time for a dirty relegation scrap it is then! Just how I like it!!
There's the checkbox to filter out all "unrealistic players", if you have an assistant manager. This would usually reduce the amount of players left on that list to only a handful crap players.

Thanks Cosmo-poof but I think I will stick to not using the player search.
Retaining players can be both helpful and a curse, depending on how you use that feature.
If you are playing with a big database anyway and a couple of nations loaded, there's no real purpose in retaining players.
Some players prefer though only loading up the leagues of one nation, a "normal" sized database and retain players of certain countries that seem most realistic for the region they want to play in.
For example when doing a career in Asia, it might be a good idea to retain the players from those (and surrounding) Asian countries.
Keep in mind that the players you decide to retain will end up in the leagues you load, so you can unbalance the game with that feature.
