Wait, so you get 8 clubs relegated in 10 seasons and then get offered a job at a quasi-big team that's pushing for promotion? That's priceless, KUTGW

2017/18 Real Oviedo La Liga

Our 1st season back in the top flight since the game began, and the chairman gives me 20 million to spend. This goes on a new GK, 2 CM’s and a new striker from Unterhaching labelled as the new 'rather good german who spits on Dutchies'. I don’t spend any of this money on defenders, so I essentially have the same defence as 2 seasons ago in the B2, with the addition of a drc from my youth squad and a young d,dmc from Belgium. A minor oversight .

We start off with Madrid away, and survive being out shot 14-1 to draw 0-0. This sets the tone for the season, as we are under a lot more pressure than the last couple of years, but with our strong midfield and attack we are able to hold and punish teams who don’t take their chances against us.

By Christmas we are sitting in a group of teams just above the relegation zone and are through to the 6th round of the cup, but I am not enjoying myself as much at the club. I can’t seem to get passionate about the games as I have at most other teams, and am looking for a way out. Second Division B2 Lemona sack their manager at the start of january, siting 3rd bottom of their league (bottom 4 go down) and I resign from Oviedo and apply for the job and get it.

The team looks a bit pish except up front, which looks very good for this league. The only problem is that they are a part time team, and no one ever wants to come to a part time team, so no one in before the transfer window closes. I expect us to struggle badly against relegation as usual, but for a change everything clicks and I go on an 11 game unbeaten run to start, and loose only 3 of 20 games to finish 8 points above relegation in 12th. Ex Milan failure/Turkey manager replaces me at Oviedo and looses 9 in a row, but they recover to stay up by 1 point on final day of season.

Already enjoying myself much more again, and feeling more involved and at home here, and for once, being optimistic about next season.

Oviedo La Liga

Pos 17th P 38 W 8 D 13 L 17 F 36 A 47 G.D. –11 Points 37

Lemona Second Division B2

Pos 12th P38 W12 D 12 L14 F 57 A 53 G.D. +4 Points 48

I destroyed 1 of my mice in frustration during a previous relegation season, and got a shitty infa red cordless mouse which stopped working about 5 minutes before the end of this season. I had to ask for the keyboard shortcut to save in IRC before i rebooted, so its an IRC injoke.

IRC >

To any newbies or whoever wondering why i walked away from a big club after years of being utterly useless, i just didnt feel the connection between me and Oviedo. They are far from an LLM side, and just using a blank check every year to sign whoever i needed is not something i find enjoyable, if i manage to earn the money, fair enough, but just being given 20 mil a year from a sugar daddy is no fun, even i can succed then.

I'd rather struggle with a tiny club and spend 5k a season to finish 2 points above relegation, it gives me a far greater feeling of success than Chelseaing my way to success ever could. The season i kept Cervia up was possibly the best ive ever felt in any season of FM/CM ever, especially after what went before. If i ever manage to get a small club to promotion (or even a top half finish), it will mean far more than whatever i managed to accomplish at Oviedo.

The real thrill i get from managing is being so involved and so connected with your club and players that every single point means everything to you, that every kick of the virtual ball you kick with your team. I didnt feel that connection with Oviedo, it just felt like a computer game, thusly i scarpered.

For further reference, iirc Ian had some good thoughts on spending/success/enjoyment when he spent 80 million to win a league cup with Liverpool , and he is much more articulate with his words than i can be.
