Does changing tactics even do anything?

Is each match just random or what? Everytime i have ever changed something in tactics screen since fm 05 nothing happens. For example when you say to a player shoot long often he doesn't shoot at all, or tell a player to not go forward he always does. Also, one time i was getting beat 4-0 so to save further embarassment i set mentality to ultra defensive and guess what? I scored 4 goals within 5 minutes of doing that. Its aload of bullshit if you ask me.

To be honest I think everything you just said then is utter rubbish. No way did you manage to score 4 goals in 5 minutes after switching defensively. Also I highly doubt that the players really are ignoring you and it's totally random with whatever tactics you choose. You either have a bunch of idiots that won't listen to you because you're a poor manager, or you've either set their creative freedom too high which basically makes them ignore most of your instructions anyway.

If you set an instruction it doesn't mean the players will follow it 100% of the time.

It means that over the course of an entire match, the players will TEND to try to follow the instruction, when it's appropriate.

And how would you no that???? I guarantee you that is what happened. I set it to ultra defensive and scored 4 goals in 5 minutes.

Well everytime i have ever set an instruction a player has never followed it at all, and usually does the opposite.

The amount of times ive got everything set to ultra defensive and deep and nobody up for corners, and yet i always seem to be caught out on the counter is a total nonsense
