Can you use just a standard 4-4-2 and be succesful in FM 08.
I am managing Man Utd, and I know I'm just in Pre-Season but apart from 1 game I am only winning games by a goal.
My results have gone as followed:

Connah's Quay 2-6 Man Utd
Fiorentina 0-1 Man Utd
Ajax 1-2 Man Utd
Antwerp 1-2 Man Utd

I can't seem get a hold of the ball and keep it!

I tweak through games but usually just the mentality bar.

Do you need to put separate player instruction or can you just leave them default?

Sorry, although I do put longer runs, up to the side of the strikers against 'poorer' teams.

I need help, Community Shield played awful!

Mate, for man utd ill play Fast Tempo, Direct passing, Play Rooney In AM And Tevez as a lone strier, Make rooney PLaymaker and tevez target man, Make him run onto the ball
