Alright, I suck at this, time to throw away the ego - DEAR GOD HELP!
So let me get straight to the point.. I suck at this game. Been living in a fantasy where as long I have good players, I'll own the EPL like a hot knife through butter. Apparently the weaker clubs are shoving that back down my throat, and as each match passes, I tend to wonder if I'm the butter.
So, from New York, and I'm playing FM08 now using Newcastle, started a new season.. read some topics by Cleon and wwfan about Rule of Two and Rule of One, gave it a shot to create a tactic, and personally the whole experience was fun.. just that I had no clue what I was doing, and I felt like I was tweaking the sliders just for the sheer enjoyment of controlling my little pawns.
So yeah, the game plan was to get Michael Owen to be target man, midfielders (Van der Vaart) to pass the ball to his feet, and let Owen finish the job. Well scoring-wise, I can't complain, I'm the third highest scoring club in the league. But in terms of defense, its horrendous, and for away games, I switch back to my desktop to watch a movie, so my eyes could be spared of such atrocity.
Been practically just breezing through matches since I have no idea why my players are defending so badly.. well I do - I suck, but I've already mentioned that.
I think to post my lineup and tactics screenshot would be quite a hassle, but if it'd be easier for people to give advice, I wouldn't mind at all.
I've uploaded a screenshot of my squad, two matches for your viewing 'pleasure' (it did humour me, somewhat), and also my tactic that I'm currently using for FM08.
Anything else you guys need for more information about my game? Also if you don't mind sharing with me, how exactly does one analyze a tactic? Do you view matches in "extended" mode, because usually, I just watch the Highlights in Key mode.
Couldn't get the second match to upload.. don't know why, will try later. However, I'm pretty sure the first horrible match sums up my entire nightmare

It's best if you just do screenshots mate, it's kinda hard to dl your tactics/match saves and then view them on fm etc... ppl (like me) are lazy.
However, from what I see so far:
1. Your wingers should not have long forward arrows all the time. It is better to start with short arrows and then change according to opposition formation/forward arrow change. By having long forward arrows all the time, your wingers participate too little in defending and leave a lot of space for opposition wingers.
2. Owen is not an ideal target man. I think you are a bit confused about the function of a target man. A target man brings OTHERS into play by flick ons or holding up the ball. If you just want ppl to pass to Owen so he can score, there's no need to set him as the targetman. Var Der Vart will pass to him automatically if he sees a chance
An ideal target man should have high jumping and high strength; or if you insist on having a 'ball to feet' targetman, he needs to have high strength at least, also he needs to 'hold up the ball' so he can utilise his strength and attractive defenders out of positions so he can pass to others for others to score.

actually i believe Owen to be a good target man because he has good technique.
having a target man doesnt mean he has to be built like a brick out house. cos theres many different styles of target men around. i remember once hearing mark viduka sayin he thinks robbie fowler was the best target man he has played with. now i ask is robbie built like a sherman tank? now he is just good technically.
i say keep owen as the target man.
although i have adriano as mine (im liverpool and i have torres as my playmaker) he sees LOADS of the ball!

It's true that in real life, there's good non-strength based playmaker targetmen like Totti, Gilardino . However I find that in FM, the above players do not perform as well as they do in real life as targetmen.
