Passing style: matching individual passing slider with player´s stats
Based on recent Cleon´s thread, i´ll ask some questions while trying to match individual passing slider with player´s stats as passing, first touch and technique.
Ok, we have 4 passing types: a) short, b) mixed, c) direct and d) long.
a)If we choose passing slider between 1-3 then team will play first touch football (maybe good for high tempo). In other way, when we choose slider > 3 until mixed, team will still play short pass;
b)Mixed is mainly used for a player with > 15 passing stat and technique will be useful too for all kind of passes;
c)In my experience, direct pass is good for playing counter attack or abusing of through passes if you got forwards with nice pace, off the ball stats. Sometimes, I lread carefully all prefered moves (individual position information);
d)Long shots could be useful on bad weather conditions, if you got a good target man (play to head) or at lower leagues (players with bad passing/technique stats).
I play with Werder Bremen (top german team) and I got some skilled players at my squad. Basically, I implemented a rigorous pressing game (normal/hard tackling, D-Line forward and medium/high closing down) with low tempo, using 4x4x2 diamond.
But, my question is about passing style. Which slider (notch) i´ll choose depending on technical attributes? I ask for help and insight please…here goes some player examples and my ideias for each one:
Baumann (MD) – 14 pass, 15 first touch, 13 technique
If Baumann got > 15 passing stat I may set him for first mixed notch. However, because he got nice first touch (15) I suppose short pass (4-6 slider) will be ok. What do you think?
Frings (MD/MC) – 15 pass, 13 first touch, 14 technique
Frings got > 15 passing stat and average technique (14). First mixed notch will be cool because Frings has potential do make short/direct passes. What´s your opinion about it?
João Moutinho (MC/AMC) – 17 pass, 16 first touch, 15 technique
I buyed João Moutinho, from Sporting, and he´s top class. Looking at his attributes I could set him with passing style mixed because I believe he could do everything (through balls is a must). However, he has 16 first touch so why not giving him 1-3 passing slider? He could play one touch football and may be useful when playing high tempo and you need to play quickly from player to player.
Quite unbelievable stats. This younger forward got 13 pace, 15 composure and only 12 finishing (he could be better with training). What do you think setting him with 1-3 passing slider? He could perform one touch football but because of 18 passing stat I don´t know if it will be more useful to let him play mixed passes.
Finally, I appreciate some help on this preferably for each player example. Thanks in advance!
My formula:
> 15 pass; < 15 first touch; > 15 technique = last mixed notch -> mix of (-) short (+) direct passes
> 15 pass; < 15 first touch; < 15 technique = first mixed notch -> mix of (+) short (-) direct passes
> 15 pass; > 15 first touch = mixed -> mix of all passes (slider 10)
< 15 pass; < 15 first touch = short pass (4-6 slider)
< 15 pass; > 15 first touch = short pass (1-3 one touch football)

If I want to play short passing, id look for passing, anticipation, decisions and first touch and composure above all other stats. But thats just my personal preference.

Id personally leave him on mixed, and allow him to make his own decision. However short passing should be okay against most teams for him.

Same as above really, except id have him direct.

probably good enough to play whatever passing you wanted in all honesty.

Thanks for re-opening it. Believe we all could "study" more about individual passing instructions based on players attributes. Can represent those details that make a difference between win or loose.
Keep waiting for some more insight.

I also play a 442 diamond; at the moment, I apply passing style to position only (e.g fullbacks on short, regardless of passing stat). I only change the global team passing style (in team instructions) depending on who my opposing team is.
It would be nice to see if adjusting the passing style to fit the player's attributes would be a better idea. For example, I have a DMC with very similar stats to Baumann (14 pass, 15 first touch, 13 technique), with a 69% pass completion ratio using 'mixed'. I wonder if he'll perform better with short passing.

It is crucial to adjust players' settings during the match. It is always best to watch in full mode and keep one eye on the match and the other on match and player statistics. So much of getting settings right has to do with your opposition. After playing for a while you're more likely to figure out a good starting point individual players, but it is always going to need monitoring and tweaking to get the best out of them.
I don't use home/away/attacking/defending/counter/possession pre-set tactics either, I tweak a bit for each match and then adjust during the match.
