Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Defensive tactics

I was having a bit of trouble keeping clean sheets with my villa team, i am scoring enough goals so that i am winning games but got the 3rd worst defence in the whole league.

Decided to check out what the AI does so watched portsmouth for a game as they had the best defencive record in the league at the time, noticed that both their center backs were marking zonally, they both seemed to have short passing, noticed they always seemed to give the ball to the midfielders straight away once they won the ball, was good for possession. Also noticed that one of the defenders would always close down straight away and then the other defender would be just behind him to close down if the first defender did not get his tackle in.

I made some changes to my tactics, like short passing to the midfielders and changed my policy on closing down, seems a little bit better have kept 3 clean sheets out of 5 games now but just wondering if anyone else has any ideas to give.

I am more interested in the closing down element and the passing side of things. Ideas for the wing backs would be good aswell, i like them to overlap the midfielders but sometimes they get caught short.

Thanks in advance for any ideas, i have been reading these forums for a while now but this is the first post i have made!
