I'm Monaco in February of the first season and they are already knocking at my door for Menez. So far they are offering about 9m euro and I reject, he gets unhappy straight away, won't renew his contract. Is there any way I can manage to keep him (his contract ends in two years) or get as much as possible for him?
Well you can try and offer him to clubs for the value you want and see if they accept. If you dont need the cash right now, then put in something like 30M or whatever over 24month installments. And maybe add like 30-40% sell on fee. You might get some clubs accepting the offer.
As for his happiness, he's still got 2 years left. As per my experience (with other players though), if you keep playing them they'll eventually become fine again. It might take a while but he'll be fine soon enough. Just play him in games and maybe single him out for praise when he plays well etc. As soon as the "unh" icon disappears, offer him a new contract straight away and he should accept. Also, maybe you can change his team status to "Key Player" and maybe that'll help? You could even try to just offer him a new contract a few months down the line even if he's unhappy. Just put down "Key Player", increase his salary to maybe match the highest paid players and all that jazz. Its not a sure-fire thing, but it does work sometimes. I actually had Bojan accept an offer from me when he was at Barca like that. When I tried to sign him, the agent claimed he's not interested in a move. I offered him a contract anyway with a "key player" role and a good salary and he accepeted. So give it a try.
At the moment I offer him a key player position paying as much as the club will let me pay. I keep playing him and after a couple of games with rating 6 he is back to 7s and 8s so I'll do what you say and offer a contract later.
About winning silverware. Will he be happy to stay if we win a cup?
I'm playing with Saint Etienne for 3 seasons now and Jeremy Menez is still at Monaco tho I tried signing him along with other top clubs for ages. Monaco somehow managed to keep him happy all this while by winning the League Cup & finishing 3rd in the 1st season. After the 2nd season begins, there were no more offers for him except from me which Monaco kept rejecting or asking for 18 million quid..
Oh btw, if you don't want to make him unhappy when you reject offers for him , try negotiating unreasonable prices for him instead so the clubs either declined to continue with the offers or pay you a ridiculous amount of money for him.
