FM2008: Southampton - When the Saints Go Marching In
Welcome to the 2008 Southampton Thread
The club was founded in 1885, by members of the St Mary's Church of England Young Men's Association. It currently plays in the English Championship, having been in the top flight for 27 consecutive years. Main rivals are Portsmouth and the clubs nickname is The Saints. The highlight of their long history came in 1976 with a historic win over Manchester United in the FA Cup and also finishing 2nd in the top flight in 1984 only 3 points behind Champions Liverpool.
Decisions have to be made between the experienced but error prone Kelvin Davis and young talented Polish keeper Bartosz Białkowski. A number of other potential good young keepers are also to be found in youth team such as Matej Rondoš.
Defenders
A potential weakpoint in the squad. Some of the recent signings such as Christian Dailly, Paul Ifil, Lucien Mettomo and Andrew Davies won't appear untill the first data update.
So you are left with a choice at left back between on loan Grégory Vignal and Czech midfielder/defender Rudi Skacel with Joseph Mills breathing down their necks. Without Ifil you are left with Alex Ostlund for the right back slot and youngster Jamie Hatch breaking through.
Centre back options include club Captain Claus Lundekvam though he is injured for most of the first season. Other options include experienced pro Darren Powell inexperienced Reading loanee Alan Bennett and recent signing and irl current captain Wayne Thomas.
Midfielders
On the wings you have the option of the pace and tricks of Nathan Dyer and Adam Hammill or the creativity of Rudi Skacel and Andrew Surman.
Central midfield is just as packed. Options include experienced internationals Jhon Viáfara and Youssef Safri along with versatile Jason Euell, the creative Iñigo Idiakez and Burley favourite Jermaine Wright. Youngsters include the impressive skills and tricks of Adam Lallana and Josh Dutton-Black.
Strikers
Last seasons top goalscorer Grzegorz Rasiak is joined by impressive Polish team mate Marek Saganowski and the experienced Stern John. Making up an attacking foursome is Ian Wrights son Bradley Wright-Phillips with young David McGoldrick out on loan. In the youth team highley rated Jamie White is out for the first few months.
As you take over the club is still coming to terms with the loss of parachute payments from the Premiership one year ago. This has resulted in many player sells and cutbacks and also leaves the club still with only 2m in the bank even after selling Kenwyne Jones to Sunderland. The transfer budget is also small at 100k and careful use of the loan and transfer market is required to get the club back to the Premiership.
Southampton Football Club in 2001 moved into the 32,000+ St Mary's Stadium and has the potential to go over the 54,000 mark in time and is one of only a handful of stadia in Europe to meet UEFA's Four Star Criteria.
The clubs has the potential to become a force again in English football with very good training facilities and a superb youth academy which has recently produced Theo Walcott and Gareth Bale along with many other current youth internationals.

Not on my game atm, what's the Saints' academy like? Good? Excellent?
we have a excellent recent track record and many more coming through
Liverpool have em as feeder club but not so we have first option, which is a shame as Southampton produce quality youngsters.
The Liverpool link is there because of the reasons explained in the Southampton data thread and agreement between me and the Liverpool researcher - Medazza
