So, on this automatic thing:

If I take over, say, a Conference North team and use the Automatic option, will my reputation be lower than if I pick Sunday League Footballer?

Similarly, if I took over a Premier team (and was willing to accept the concomitant excommunication from the Grand Omnipotent Poobah), would my reputation be higher than for Sunday Footballer?

That appears to be so. I started at Blyth which has an obscure reputation, and the game assigned me an unproven rep. However, if you take over a Conf N club which has a local rep it might give you obscure. Mechanically speaking, it is probably tied to the rep points a club has, so a low end "local" club would probably get you an obscure rep, while one on the cusp of becoming regional might get you a local rep.

I'm about 7-8 seasons in with Blyth and in my second season in L2. Starting as automatic rep I've only just gone Regional. However I am currently managing NZ as well.
