2011/12

Onward into the Champions League (1st qualifying round):
QR1: v Dinamo Tblisi 0-0 (H) 3-1 (A)
QR2: v FC Kobenhavn 0-2 (H) 1-1 (A)

And so ends another European adventure. The money from this run, coupled with the sale of our two best players for a combined £750k meant we had over a million in the bank.

Still the board wouldn't go pro, or allow me to scout anywhere other than Wales. So I told them to **** off: The prospect of another season or two of battling with Llanelli, followed by the probable tedium of domestic domination that normally happens in these saves didn't inspire me, so with no board backing to have a crack at Europe, I cleared my desk.

It was Christmas before anyone else took me on: My new home was with the Monkey Hangers at Victoria Park. Relegated the season before from League 1, they were expected to run away with League 2. Their record when I took the reins was:

W6 D5 L12 Pos 21.

I turned it around a little, with a W9 D5 L9 record for the second half of the season and a final position of 20th. I'm hoping for a playoff push next year.

2012/13 - Hartlepool, League Two

I had a sneaking suspicion that we were good enough for the playoffs without major reinforcements, despite the media, board and fans predicting mid-table. Our biggest weaknesses were in goal (finally resolved in the January window), right back (loanee sorted) and right midfield (never really resolved).

And so it proved. Most of the season we were in and around the playoff spots, and a really good run in the last few weeks saw us grab 4th place, but we were never really in the automatic hunt (3rd place 12pts ahead, champions Cheltenham finishing a full 25 pts in front).
