Personally I think IRL he'll be the FA's worst nightmare, adn the minute one of the 6 or 7 better teams beats England it'll go from "Ooh the team won" to "Ooh the [insert racist portuguese moniker here' cost us the game - he should $%^* off home!!"

Shame, but this little xenophobic introspective island race is not up to having a foreigner in charge - albeit I want Klinsmann.
It's mostly the media who are like that. Personally I'd welcome a good foreign manager if it means England start playing well. I was a fan of Sven, even if he was an idiot off the field, he done fairly well as a manager.

The FA will wait and wait then make a last minute approach after he's agreed with AC Milan or some other team and he'll throw it back in their faces.

They'll then hire an average English manager like Allardyce and England will keep on failing.

Don't say you weren't warned.

I liked Sven, typical Swede, cool, calm, collective and altogether got the job done, to think that if Beckham had not lept into the air to protect his ankle against Brazil Sven might well have seen England make a World Cup Final again, but we all know what the Brazilians did once gifted the ball - think Big Sol was the only outfield player to attempt a tackle - they walked through 4 others.

Personally I don't think any national team should go to a foreigner as a manager, should be the same nationality as the team. The reason national teams were made was to see which country is the best and if we see England playing like the portuguese, there's just no point really.

Sam Allerdyce plays a long ball game
Harry Redknapp focuses on power, which unfortuanley we don't have a lot of.
Steve Coppell uses the wings but puts 10 men behind the ball against stronger teams
I can't see Curbishley or Pearce doing a good enough job unfortunately.
So out of our finest English managers, none of them play the English way (fast, direct but not root one, hard in the tackle, take risks.) Therefore, it makes sense to choose a foriegner. Add that to Coppell ruling himself out and Redknapp and Allerdyce having no chance, it doesn't look good for an English manager.

In fairness I do agree with the sentiment of a national manager for national team, but England are woefully bereft of options now that Sam has been found out, and the rest are awful apart from Harry, and Harry is too nice to be England manager.

Who's currently good enough in England to manage the national side though. There hasnt even been any English managers that have managed to win the EPL, CL, or Eufa cap in recent years.

Using that argument, why does it make sense to use a foreigner? How many of them play the English way?

What is the English way then?

Is it how Liverpool played in the 80's?

Or is it how Watford played around the same time?

The only English managers with anything like a decent CV are Bobby Robson and Roy hodgeson
