It is understood that Arsenal captain Thierry Henry requested the Arsenal board grant PÃ*res a two year deal when he agreed his own new contract yesterday.
PÃ*res made a sad exit from Wednesday's Champions League final loss to Barcelona, being substituted for reserve goalkeeper Manuel Almunia - which would have been an unfitting end to a glorious spell at Arsenal in which he was voted player of the year.
PÃ*res said several days ago that he would probably sign for Villarreal if he did not agree a new deal with Arsenal. "I will go to Villarreal or elsewhere. I have still not signed a contract for Villarreal."
Not too sure on Cole, I hope Bobby stays as Henry plays that bit better with him in the side. Depending on Carlos's motives at Real, I can see Ash going to Real. If there were no Colegate he would've been a Chelsea player already I feel.
Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein says the club turned down two £50m offers for striker Thierry Henry before he agreed to sign a new four-year deal.
Henry's decision ended any chance of him replacing £47m Zinedine Zidane as the world's most expensive player.
"We turned down two world record deals from Spanish clubs. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to work out who they were," he told the Sunday Express.
"Our message was clear - he wasn't for sale. I'd like to think he heard that."
Dein also revealed that the contract Henry signed was one that he was offered back in January.
"We made an offer in January, prodded Thierry now and then, but never put pressure on him," he said.
"Money wasn't really mentioned. He wanted to know where we were going, but in reality I think he knew."
Dein said the chance to influence the next generation of youngsters at Arsenal, who want to play with him, may also have persuaded Henry to stay on.
"He had seen the youngsters emerge after a dark period.
"We have three teenagers at the World Cup - how many other clubs can say that?
"The reason they are here is because of Thierry. The first question Theo Walcott asked was "Will Thierry still be here?".
"I believe he also knew that if he went to a club like Barcelona or Real Madrid, he would just be a prince. Here he knows he is a king."
JULIANO BELLETTI, the defender who scored Barcelona's Champions League winner, last night sensationally claimed: "Thierry Henry is finished as a top-class striker."
The Spanish giants are furious at Henry's decision to snub them and stay with Arsenal.
And Brazilian Belletti sneered: "Henry is Arsenal's best player but his time at the top level of the game is over.
"He might just make it into the world's top 10 at the moment but that's not for certain.
"He needed to leave London to become one of the top strikers but if he doesn't leave Arsenal, he never will."
Belletti also ACCUSED Arsenal of having problems among the players, LABELLED them a ‘tired' team and TAUNTED Ashley Cole for losing his side the Champions League Final on Wednesday.
The winner was scored down Cole's flank and Belletti said: "We were told Cole was not in the best shape. Ronaldinho said he was going to attack down Arsenal's left. That was the key part to our game-plan."
Belletti added: "Arsenal had no secrets we couldn't unlock. They are a tired team who have problems among the players — and we took advantage.
"We knew there was uncertainty about whether some players were waiting for the season to end so they could leave."
Man fuck Belletti, that is a shit thing to say. I bet you Ronaldinho would understand Thierry's words that were said after the game, after all losing in that manner and getting so far. Belletti is just being a big headed twat now, trying to back up his team mates, after words were said to them by Thierry, but who does he think he is? Just cause he scored the match winner? Dickhead. Lost alot of respect for this guy now, used to think he was a decent player since he plays my position and all.
Sol Campbell sold to Fenerbahce for £8 million
By Myles Palmer
Arsenal and England centreback Sol Campbell has been sold to Fenerbahce for 12 million euros.
GREAT BUSINESS !
That makes the arrival of ace WBA defender Curtis Davies, valued at £6 million, quite likely
Davies was the best player on the field when Arsenal played West Brom recently.
Let's hope Sol is happy over there.
Good luck, Sol, and enjoy your last World Cup
