I am playing the '08 demo and using your '07 tactic templates from your "How to playFM07:" Tactical Design and Management Strategy.

Do you think that they will still hold good or otherwise for FM'08?

Hey wwfan, the easy to understand version of the tactics thread you created for 07 was amazing, and I still use it to this day. It's on a print-out on my computer desk, and I consult it before every match. What I was wondering though is a couple of things. Firstly, will you be doing an updated version for 08? And secondly, previously in 07 you (quite rightly) said that most AI teams when playing at home against the user would play a 4-4-2 formation with long farrows on the wingers. In 08 though I now notice that the AI teams play a few different varied formations - but a lot now play 4-4-2 with short farrows on the wingers. Have you any tips of what tactics to play against this? Attack, Counter, Possession etc?

The criteria to counter attack is not only to counter attack but also to cause a situation where the opposition would be attacking your team hence the philosophy, to counter. In order for a counter puncher boxer to make a punch, first he has to let his opposition make a punch by inviting it. So invite the opposition in and set up an attacking unit close to your striker to support him in preperation to counter attack directly at or over their defenders without any midfielders getting in the way. This is why direct passing works well.

The important bit is not to give them too much convidence in coming in otherwise it could cause damages. So thread carefully at your defensive line and mentality while probably ticking counter attack would overide overall game tempo. Generally what would happen is a long ball would be played to your striker when counter attack is ticked on. If the oppositions defensive line is low then counter attacking won't be worth it.
