This is a tactic I made for my Aston Villa side as an away tactic. It has been quite effective in producing 0-1, 0-2 wins away or home games against quality sides and has given me the best away record I have had in a while. I'm starting a lower league game and will attempt to make a version of this for LLMs, as it is now it has not been tested with any teams other than Aston Villa and Palermo.
Formation:
A 4-3-3 that uses 2 DM's to ensure defensive responsibilities are kept and allows for fullbacks to become quite offensive. Wingers double as outside forwards and help spread the defense and open up through balls for the lone striker or the opposite winger.
Team Instructions:
Closing down is set on max until they fix the closing down in a future patch, it doesn't tire my players any more than having it at a normal setting and if anything it encourages the DM's to put pressure on attacks and force bad passes or long shots. Passing style is direct to allow quick counters, and it is quite effective. The mentality you want to keep in attacking to ensure players come forward, as the formation is defensive and without an attacking mentality your striker will have little service to work with. Counter attack should always be on and I have always used playmaker with the MC as one. I experimented using a target man a bit but like the style of play without one.
Positions:
No matter what position, acceleration is the key stat I looked for. The slowest player on my team was Barry with accel of 12.
Fullbacks: I have the settings different for the DR and DL, as I wanted Guilherme to be more of an offensive threat and Mellberg to stay more defensive. This is not only because of those 2 individuals attributes but because Farfan on the right would often be very offensive whereas Barry on the left was still a ball winner which allowed Guilherme more freedom on that side. Acceleration, Bravery, Workrate, Heading
Defensive Midfielders: The catalyst of the team, they're your ball winners which is very important for counterattacks. They usually distribute to the wingers and then get forward themselves. If you have a DMC who is good at longshots you could try longshots often with them and set the mentality to team default. Neither of mine were good at longshots but luckily my MC, VdV, is. Acceleration, Heading, Positioning, Passing, Bravery
Central Midfielder: Your MC is important, he will quite often pass to your ST and then get forward himself to create opportunities. VdV doesn't have a great finishing attribute but he was always solid in front of goal for me, #2 in goals behind Eddie Johnson for my Villa side. Brienza was the same way for my Palermo side as well playing as MC. Creativity, Passing, Decisions
Wingers: Farfan is the mold I want all my wingers to take, he was the most dangerous player on the pitch at all times. He was constantly setting up superb moves, most of the counterattacking goals were setup by a long ball from Farfan. Acceleration, Dribbling, Finishing
Striker: If you were to go with a target man then you should set crossing for the wingers to often. I'm not a huge fan of the target man in FM so I went with Eddie Johnson in that role and Moore, Young and Harewood occasionally. You basically just want someone who isn't going to miss a lot of chances and who has plenty of speed. Acceleration, Pace, Finishing, Composure
This is also for playing better teams at home and protecting a lead. I usually played a 4-4-2 diamond in the past but with the current closing down issues it wasn't working for me, but this worked better than I had hoped. Good luck with it and please all feedback welcome and especially looking for LLM's to test it.
At home I'm using a 4-4-2 diamond, but haven't had as much success as I should with it for a tactic being used at home only. I use this one at home against ManU, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Tottenham.
Only reason I don't use this one always is because I win but only score 1 or 2 goals so defensive players usually end up with a 7 rating. Thats fine for me in past years but its a flaw in the new system where fans don't approve of your signings. They don't think de Jong, Guilherme, nor Makoun were good signings even though de Jong leads the league in tackles per game, Guilherme is as solid at LB considering how offensive he gets, and Makoun constantly sets up great counters.
