I am looking to create my own training schedules, starting with my goalkeepers. Having looked at the standard regime, I concluded that in addition to the obvious three categories of:
<UL TYPE=SQUARE>
<LI> Strength
<LI> Aerobic
and
<LI> Goalkeeping
</UL>
...three additional categories were beneficial:
<UL TYPE=SQUARE>
<LI> Tactics,
<LI> Ball Control
and
<LI> Set Pieces
</UL>
This baffled me however, as I was not aware of any reason why goalkeepers should be training in Set Pieces, as I have yet to ever ask my goalkeeper to take my free-kicks or corners, let alone penalties. So to clarify why this category was being included, I checked the attributes tab that shows me which attributes are affected by that category of training, and all that seems to be affected that will impact on a goalkeeper is Free Kicks. Now I could understand if this rating was in regard to the shot stopping capabilities from free kicks, but as far as I am aware, the free kick attribute is only used outfield by the free kick taker? Would I be correct in thinking this?
If this is the case, there is no need in my eyes to include set piece training in any goalkeeper regime, other than as a left over idea from the old training system?
The same can be said for Ball Control, as the affected attributes are:
<UL TYPE=SQUARE>
<LI> First Touch
<LI> Technique
</UL>
Yet again, neither attribute is one I would consider when looking for a goalkeeper, and to my knowledge has no bearing on a goalkeepers performance in goal? If so then this is yet another wasted area of training for a goalkeeper.
If neither of these areas are required for goalkeeper training, then why are they included in the standard goalkeeper regime? And if they do in fact have some bearing on a goalkeeper's quality, could someone please explain how?
