I find a simple 4-4-2 with direct passing seems to always bring results for my team. Might have a couple of bad matches, usually just draws but win the majority.
Playing as Melbourne Victory in the A-League currently...helps goalie is a superstar.
Flat 4-4-2 systems have been traditional hard to succeed with in almost every version of the FM series. FM07 was a change for me. I created a fantastic 4-4-2, basing my entire game around a balanced midfield and a big man/little man up-front. I dominated the domestic and European game after three seasons with Sunderland.
However, in FM08, the percentage of headers any one player wins, regardless of jumping, heading, and strength stats has decreased dramatically. So the idea of basing your attacking play around a tall target man seems pretty futile.
I've also struggled to create a decent 4-4-2. Mine are either far too defensive or too attacking. Not necessarily good attacking one either. Very difficult to get the right balance it seems...
I'm having a huge success with At.Madrid on my second season using 4-4-2 (well it's more like 4-4-1-1 when I don't have possession and 4-4-2 when I do). After half a season I'm 1st in the league and leader in the team scoring. So, what I lack in the defence I make up in the attack.

in a 442, how bad is the idea of using a DMC in front of the 4 def?
Not bad at all. So long as you set him up correctly and ensure he does his job of breaking down an attacks before they reach your back four.
You'll have to ensure that your other five outfield players are then doing the appropriate attacking job; so you'll have five defensive players, and five offensive. Balance is a key word in any tactic, I feel.
Like you, I prefer playing 4-4-2 but have struggled to make it successful in v8.0.1
If you look at the 'Tactics' discussion board, there's one by a guy called 'Rekluse' (or something like that.
It's a flat back 4, def mid, 2 wide men, an att mid, and 2 strikers. I can't remember the specifics, but so far it's resulted in 3 wins and a draw for me. You should check it out.
