Default Stop! Hammer Time!

Long time lurker, first time poster. Hello!

Frank sent me off to Norway and Hammerfest, apparently the world's most northerly city (depending if ~9,000 people counts as a "city", of course).

2006 - Hammerfest FK, Second Division Group 4

Players in: None
Players out: 3 released

Backed to face a struggle against the drop by board, fans and media, we surprise everyone, not least me, by romping to the top of the division and holding first place against Lillestrom's II team and local rivals Alta, eventually wrapping up the league with 3 games to go. Some rather gung-ho football masks a wobbly defence and uncertain goalkeeping and we top the team scoring charts by a country mile. In the cup, though, we meekly go out in the 2nd round in a game that leaves two key players injured for a couple of months.

Our assistant manager takes a promising U19s side to the top of their league and to vistory in the U19s cup, beating Odd Grenland's youth team 2-1 AET in the final.

2nd Div Grp 4: P26 W20 D3 L3 For 68 Ag 19 GD +49 Pts 63 Pos 1st

2007 - Hammerfest FK, Adeccoligaen

Players in: 7
Players out: 12 released

We're given odds of 1000-1 against promotion at the start of season, and with the team's captain going down with a broken leg in training in pre-season, and our inability to find a keeper to take over from our shaky incumbent No. 1, that seems fair. The team do their best to live up to expectations, throwing away a 3-0 first half lead against Viking in the opening game to lose 4-3, scoring no points at all for 6 games, and generally sinking like a rock. I sign a pair of strikers to bolster our lousy attacking line; in 25 combined appearances, they score only 4 goals, including 2 penalties. We eventually go down on the last day of the season when Moss bang in a winner 3 minutes from time; a draw would have seen us stay up. It's much deserved. In the cup, we lose on penalities to Brann in the 3rd round.

The U19s romp the league and cup yet again. At the end of the season, I move the best of them - including a strike partnership that hit 80-odd goals this season and 50-odd the last - into the senior side and sack the makeweights.

Adeccoligaen: P30 W7 D5 L18 For 33 Ag 63 GD -30 Pts 26 Pos 13th

2008 - Hammerfest FK, Second Division Group 3

Players in: 2
Players out: 22, all but 3 released

Everyone expects promotion. I wield the axe and ditch a lot of dead wood, and at last manage to sign another goalkeeper. While we lose our first game 3-2 that proves to be the only league loss we suffer all season. In the cup, we make it to the 4th round and lose to Rosenborg, which at least gives us a big payout. Both young strikers do well when not out injured, which happens a lot, and the squad as a whole looks much more solid. With their best players gone, our U19s revert to type and are awful in league and cup.

Second Division Group 3: P26 W20 D5 L1 For 54 Ag 16 GD +38 Pts 65 Pos 1st

KUTGW!

Love trying young unexperienced strikers up front. If they don't score, they worry. If they do score, they worry.

Size of population has nothing to do with city status, at least in the UK - have you ever been to St Davids?

No, but I know of it. But I don't know if other countries use the "has a cathedral = city" criteria instead of vague grading based on population size.

That said, I only know Hammerfest as a "city" thanks to Wikipedia and a "Visit us!!!" tourist information site, so hardly unbiased sources...
