Following a lengthy career with Newport County, I decided that a change was needed. Loaded up all leagues from Hong Kong, China, Indonesia, India and Malaysia (not sure how I missed Japan!).
South China Athletic Association; Hong Kong 1st Division
Season 06/07
Final position: 5th
Record: P 18 W 8 D 6 L 4 Pts 30
Exciting first season saw me finishing as mid-table as a person can get. Scored plenty but conceded just as many.
One surprise on joining the club was to find that the current UEFA president (or at least his namesake) was in my squad. He was quality too.
Didn’t sign any players, but released a few and hoped that the team would gel as we went into the next season.
Season 07/08
Final Position: 5th
Record: P 18 W 8 D 7 L 3 Pts 31
The incredibly short seasons mean that you can finish two in a day, if you have nothing better to do. Still, it also means that the season is over just as soon as it begins. I still can’t name all of my back four!
Fun season again, and a slight improvement.
Season 08/09
Final Position: 1st
Record: P 18 W 11 D 6 L 1 Pts 39
This season was a shock to everyone at the club, having signed a couple of Brazilians from recently relegated Hong Kong 08, we put together a great season, losing our only game on the final day.
From the records of the previous seasons, it’s obvious that the difference between glory and mid-table anonymity is very small (roughly 8 points).
Season 09/10
Final Position: 1st
Record: P 18 W 14 D 1 L 3 Pts 43
We retained the title in style, having the top two scorers in the division. We also had a pretty awful defensive record, having lost some of my experienced defenders to retirement at the end of last season. Still, it makes a change from watching my dour Newport County team grind out 1-0 wins/defeats.
Season 10/11
Final Position: 2nd
Record: P 18 W 14 D 2 L 2 Pts 44
At the beginning of the season I decided that this was to be my last year in charge of the club.
Wanting to go out in a blaze of glory I played my first team instead of my reserves in the cups (there are three or four here by the way, and the prize is £5,000 for winning them!). This plan didn’t really work as it just wore out the older players in my squad and we lost the league by 3 points.
I think I’ll stick around for one more year. The scouts are well and truly on the prowl now.
